I live in Japan, where the food's a little different, and I've devised a typical day's paleo menu I think I can afford. Will it make me healthy? What is lacking? What is redundant?

6 jumbo eggs 2.5 cups of coconut milk 4 ounces of Spam 50 grams of natto 1/2 avocado .5 cups sweet potato

Looking at cronomoter, it looks low in B1, B3, C, E, K, Calcium, Magnesium, Manganese and Potassium. But it assigns Spam almost no vitamins, which doesn't seem quite right, since a pork chop has a lot of Bs and whatnot.

Would I be better off eating chicken instead of Spam? What about ground pork? Or Chile farmed salmon?

Grass-fed and wild stuff are not really an option. Especially seafood, because it's all contaminated with cesium from Fukushima around here these days.

I would say anything is better spam. – pbo Apr 25 2012 at 19:54
I'm thinking of ditching the sweet potato and adding in a cup of chopped cabbage. I want to keep my carbs under 50 grams for now. – Paleoish Dude Apr 25 2012 at 20:00
What's wrong with Spam? douglassreport.com/2004/11/23/… – Paleoish Dude Apr 25 2012 at 20:11

ingredients in the classic variety of Spam are chopped pork shoulder meat, with ham meat added, salt, water, modified potato starch as a binder, and sodium nitrite as a preservative: its a canned meat product, better to consume meat closest to its truest form – Kelly Apr 25 2012 at 20:21

I think you're doing the best you can for the situation you're in. Give it a go for a few weeks and see how you're doing. I'm sorry for your environmental situation. it's aweful.

He is right about the contamination, it's been all over the news. And they are right about the Spam. SomethingPosingAsMeat is soooooooo not Paleo. You need some ruminants in your diet, badly!! They have a much better Omega 6 to 3 ratio.

What if I supplemented fish oil instead of adding ruminants. Would that do it? – Paleoish Dude Apr 25 2012 at 20:56

Ohhhhh my. Please respect others culture. You may think spam is gross But it's very common in Hawaii. A simple 'perhaps you should try more Things like chicken, beef as close as you can'. I personally do not have the Budget for organic and/or grass fed everything for a famiky of 5 but I do my Best and feel that a paleo diet may it be imported or not is still.better than a SAD diet. I would ask, what kind of proteins can you get Where you are at? Goodluck to you Sir.

I can get chicken, chilean salmon, ground beef, ground pork, tofu. Most anything, really. It's just a question of cost. Beef is a little more expensive than the others. And it's not grass-fed. – Paleoish Dude Apr 26 2012 at 2:34

Does the fermentation of the soybeans remove all of the nasty stuff in soy?

Not sure exactly, but the consensus among Paleoish people seems to be that natto is good for you. Mark Sisson endorses it. marksdailyapple.com/k2/#axzz1t5JTPT2J – Paleoish Dude Apr 25 2012 at 20:08

Natto is the food highest in k2, because of the bacterial fermentation. The general consensus is that fermented soy is pretty good for you, it's the non fermented soy that causes issues. – AmandaLP Apr 25 2012 at 20:29

I asked this issue about fermented soy products and did not get much positive feedback. But I had thought from readings many years ago that fermented soy products were a plus. As I also live in Asia, I have included fermented soy products such as natto, misso, tamari and tempeh in my diet. I miss getting saba (mackerel) from Japan, but still can get southern oceans fish. – Orang Asli Apr 25 2012 at 21:12
Orang Asli, what southern ocean fish are you referring to? What do you mean by "southern oceans"? Why do you think it's safer? How can I get it here? Thanks! – Paleoish Dude Apr 25 2012 at 23:10

The Southern ocean generally refers to colder oceans occupying the temperate,sub-antarctic & antarctic waters south of Australia & New Zealand,Patagonia & Reunion Islands. The white fleshed fish I get is the Patagonia Toothfish.but there's an issue with this fish regarding it sustainability&mercury content.2 fishing companies are legalised to fish in the southern ocean south of Australia, while many countries' fisheries are not.I also get mackerel from New Zealand.Southern blue whiting-New Zealand;yellowtail kingfish–Australia & New Zealand;also rock cod,calamari/squid,cuttlefish,& sardine – Orang Asli Apr 26 2012 at 21:04

EWWW get rid of the spam! Lol. Yes. You would be better of eating the other items you mentioned. Your diet also seems low in calories. I would up the eggs a bit and definitely get rid of the spam and replace with a "real " meat. Sorry If I came off as offensive.

Spam? You live in a country where they have the best food in the world and you are eating Spam. I am speechless.

What about other vegetables? They have wonderful greens and fabulous berries!!! Bok choy? Chinese cabbage?

You see, there is a little problem with cesium contamination in the food supply post-Fukushima, so I like my food imported when possible. Avoiding internal radiation is the most important thing I could be doing dietetically. Besides, Spam is good and the Okinawans, for example, love it. – Paleoish Dude Apr 25 2012 at 20:23
Have you read the ingredients? By the way, do you know the reason why Okinawans love it? Spam was not introduced till 1945, just so you know. I beg you NOT to eat SPAM. Are you sure ALL vegetables are contaminated? – VB Apr 25 2012 at 20:38
They are not all contaminated, but they are not tested very rigorously, so it's a crap shoot. I eat vegetables from Western Japan and imported vegetables. Don't worry. – Paleoish Dude Apr 25 2012 at 20:39
Do they have any raised fish? Imported grass-fed meat (from New Zealand)? My friend is living in Japan now (Osaka) and she eats everything. – VB Apr 25 2012 at 23:06
