What do you think of the idea of drinking olive oil, say 400 calories' worth, at night if I'm still hungry? It's the cheapest calories I can get that seems reasonably healthy.

If I were you, I would have no more than one tablespoon or two. And you can add some shredded carrot. And sesame seeds. And it's a salad! Or you can add some baked/roasted sweet potatoes and parsnips. And beets. Just don't drink too much or it. If you take it in smaller doses, I don't see why not. |

That sounds gross and pointless (in my opinion). |

Warm some coconut milk (aprox half a pint) mix in 20g of Kerrygold, 3 tsp of cocoa, a pinch of cinnamon then half a pot of double cream (aprox 50ml) and continue to warm on a low heat for ten mins. Thats just over 400kcals, tastes delicious has a high sat fat ratio and is great for testosterone boosting if taken around 10pm enhancing night time recovery. Not recommended if you are SAD. |

I actually do this to suppress appetite - definitely works. The theory is from Seth Roberts: http://blog.sethroberts.net/ |

I just don't know if you'd actually be able to do it very often, doesn't sound palatable. I'd definitely try adding a TB here and there and definitely consider coconut milk, coconut cream additions if you can....I think you'll get more enjoyment and maybe even stomach it. Even if you went so far as to indulge yourself with a mix of ghee, coconut cream, honey and coconut, toss in a bit of organic cocoa and roll in nuts....you'd probably stomach it better (yes, this is a cheat indulgent I use but in moderation since its really high fat) |

I did this for about two months without any issues. I drank 2-3 tbsp morning and night. I was doing it to help gain weight and to try to relieve constipation. It didn't help me gain much weight, but it sure did make me poop and also made my farts smell horrendous. |

If it's cheap, it ain't 100% virgin olive oil. High quality coconut oil is much less expensive than high quality olive oil. |

I don't see the point in drinking 400 calories worth of olive oil. I feel like their are less disgusting ways of satisfying a craving at night without spending much money. |

What do I think? I think it sounds pretty grim. It sounds like a recipe for deliberately minimizing the amount of pleasure you derive from your food. Why do that (yeah, food reward theory, yada yada, but you didn't say you were trying to lose weight)? Have bigger meals during the day. Yeah, I get that you're poor. But you'd be better off, assuming that you have a source of cheap high quality 100% virgin olive oil, incorporating those same 400 calories into your current diet throughout the day. It would be so much kinder to yourself. Have a salad! Roast some vegetables! Make pesto! I have no idea what's available at food banks these days. If it's not all macaroni and cheese and Twinkies, maybe you can find food there. A longer-term fix might be growing some of your own vegetables. I understand the concept of thinking of food as fuel not entertainment, but this seems excessive. EDIT: What about eggs? Saute two eggs in that olive oil. You can frequently get eggs for, what, 99 cents/dozen? Two eggs is about 150 calories for sixteen cents. |

I drink olive oil and have for several years (even prior to paleo) not only did I note an amazing cognitive response, but my skin (although it has never been an issue)saw tremendous benefits as well. the true benefit, especially for someone focusing on fitness through paleo is satiety with fats begins in the mouth unlike protein (gut) and the leptins (sp) quickly shuts of 'your' feed me desires-- this will allow you to make wiser food choices at the pantry. Side Note** Several years ago, the oldest woman in the world (I believe 128??) who was Israeli, explained that she believed her secret to health and longevity was a result of her olive oil consumption. Apparently, for the past 40 years or so, she consumed roughly 6oz a day from a tumbler. |

Why would you want to do that? It's the equivalent of eating 30 bananas a day...and we all know how that pans out... |

If you're going to go our for a hard night drinking. Have a shot of olive oil, the Mediterranean's would take a spoonful to coat their stomachs before going out to prevent a hangover. |

If you're going to do this make sure you have your omega ratios in check. Not a biggie if you're eating correctly on the whole, but consuming a dose of olive oil could push your over the n6 range. Why not go for some macadamia or walnuts? Probably not as cheap (not sure if you meant that literally or metaphorically?) as olive oil, but at least you'd get some n3 in there, too. If you're sweating the carbs, maybe opt for some omega-3 fish oil as a substitute. |

Yeah, I've done that before. You can just pour it directly into your mouth from the spout, otherwise you'll waste 1/4 of it coating the glass you drink out of. Alternatively, mix it with a few scoops of psyllium husk powder, a couple tablespoons of full fat cottage cheese, water, stir it up quick and chug it down. It's gross but will immediately kill any hunger pangs. Just an FYI, though, chugging olive oil promotes a gag reflex even with expensive virgin olive oil, and you will probably have some GI issues if you do it on more than an intermittent basis. |

My mom worked for a guy who would drink a bottle of olive oil with his lunch every day, seriously. Apparently he was skinny as a rail somehow. |

I'm not sure why there's such a backlash here. I agree that there are tastier and more pleasurable ways to get in some extra calories than tons and tons of olive oil, but Paleoish Dude said he was thinking maybe "400 calories worth." That would be approximately 4 Tbsp, right? (Give or take for the calorie/portion geeks out there.) I wouldn't call that drinking olive oil. Some people here swear by the Bulletproof coffee with butter in it, others drop a Tbsp of coconut oil into their coffee or tea. Purposely adding fat doesn't seem so alien around here. (Depending on one's needs and goals, of course of course.) Again, I'm not saying 4 Tbsp of olive oil is the best thing to do every single day, but many of us have probably done a lot wackier things here and there, no? (I do have to agree, though, that if you did this often, you'd be going through a lot of oil and that would defeat the purpose of looking for something cheap, assuming you would use a GOOD olive oil.) |

-make mayonaise from olive oil and dip every veggy in it. -eat/use everything from a bird. make broth from bones, if you know how to cook you can even eat the bones because there so soft. -cabbage, cabbage and onions. -look outside for eatable lettuce ,seeds etc. |

I guess it wold be OK if you could be SURE it was real olive oil. Seems to me the only stuff you can be sure about is way too expensive to just be drinking every morning. I'd go for coconut oil or ghee instead and use rendered animal fats and butter for cooking. I buy olive oil but I use it sparingly on my salads. It would really suck if you were unwittingly guzzling canola oil or something. Might be reversing all the good you are doing on your paleo diet. http://www.foodrenegade.com/your-extravirgin-olive-oil-fake/ |
