I know that in North America there seem to be one or two brands such selling BPA free tins but in the UK I have checked far and wide and it seems to be that no one is doing it?

I have pretty much accepted that I will have to start making my own coconut milk but I like tinned sardines as they are quick and easy..

I have called Whole foods and they said they werent aware. How can Whole foods London not know about BPA?

Anyone?

Thanks

I placed a related question on BPA-free tuna in Europe here months ago, didn't find any takers. I've limited my canned tuna intake, but still eat a can or two a week. I make my own coconut milk for the same reason, and started using fresh tomatoes. – Wisper Apr 27 2012 at 21:40

You can't make coconut milk from tomatoes. – Warren D Apr 27 2012 at 22:21

If you have plenty of money (sadly I am not really in this boat) there are various brands of tuna/sardines in glass to be bought. Delicatessens are your best bet (have had some exquisite and unbelievably expensive French sardines in various London delis) although I've got a feeling I've seen tuna in glass in Waitrose, possibly in their cook's ingredients range. If you find any BPA free tins I'd like to know too!

Seems to be US-based, not really an option for us Europeans due to exorbitant mailing costs, duties, taxes and import regulations on food. – Wisper Apr 27 2012 at 21:39
Funny, that's actually the company I contacted for international shipping information. They're looking for EU distributors, so if anyone's interested, contact them. – Wisper Apr 27 2012 at 21:50
They did say iherb.com carries their products, but see above on caveats. – Wisper Apr 27 2012 at 21:50

I doubt they would have meant not aware about BPA, probably not aware of a company not using BPA in the tin lining. Tinned food is so highly processed, I wouldn't touch it BPA or not.

Yes. I meant that they weren't aware about whether or not they sold any tins free of BPA. The only tinned food I buy is coconut milk and sardines. After years of being a vegetarian this was never an issue as I never ate coconut milk or sardines! – MrsD Apr 26 2012 at 11:43

Hi, I am looking for BPA free Tuna, here in the UK, too. I think my second option will have to be talking to a fishmonger about getting some off-cuts of tuna to process myself somehow? but probably still more expensive and definitely less convenient!

About coconut milk...the Asian stores sell frozen coconut milk (and young coconut water, and grated coconut) in plastic sachets in their frozen section. Most have added citric acid or potassium ?__ for preservative, but that's not too bad. Krissie

Buy dried pulses and soak them, only buy passata in glass jars or make your own version of the 'tinned tomato', make your own coconut milk and treat yourself to a nice bit of fish occasionally from the fish mongers..... alternatively we should go to the streets and demand more respect from these companies and our government.
