  1. Eat whole, unprocessed foods. (If it has an ingredients label, apply scrutiny)
  2. Avoid grains, legumes, refined oils (hydrogenated, and/or non virgin/heat-refined oils), refined sugars, and/or dairy depending on your tolerances and/or goals.
  3. Focus on stress mitigation, improve your sleeping and lifestyle priorities.

Meat depends on budget: ideally (and if you can afford it) you want grassfed or pastured and get the fattiest cuts you can. If your budget is limited, go for the leanest cuts of standard meat and supplement your fat intake with coconut oil or clarified butter. – cerement Apr 26 2012 at 14:50

I thought the infographic by the staff here at PaleoHacks was a great primer!

Enjoy!

  • Meat/fish/veggies: pretty much all you want
  • yams/sweet potatos/coconut/coconut oil/olive oil/nuts/fruit: in moderation, or all you want if you are lean and healthy
  • cream/butter/cheese: some say yes, some say no., In moderation if they're not causing you problems
  • treat: 85% chocolate, if you can manage to eat only a small piece per day (I can't)

I don't get it? – jess Apr 26 2012 at 14:37
There isn't a single version of the diet. That list set forth the major variations for your consideration. I suppose it was a little elliptical. My thought was that you should probably do some work on your own rather than just asking for a detailed explanation. I mean, what is it that you do and don't know already? – tdgor Apr 26 2012 at 14:48

tdgor is pointing out that there is no one definitive licensed and trademarked "Paleo". What they all agree on is eating real food (meat, vegetables, saturated fat) and avoid grains, legumes, vegetable oils, sweeteners. – cerement Apr 26 2012 at 14:54
sweet, I already eat a similar diet, just need to cut out the grains I've been eating (oat bran, buckwheat and rice bran) – jess Apr 26 2012 at 14:57
Exactly. I seem to be particularly cryptic today. Thanks, cerement. – tdgor Apr 26 2012 at 14:57

Here is what I stopped eating... grains (breads, pasta, rice, crackers, etc.) potatoes, dairy (with an occasional cheat with a hard salty cheese, feta) sugar (candy, honey) peanuts/cashews, fruit juice

What I do eat... meat, eggs, fruits, vegetables, almonds, walnuts... try to eat grass fed meats (eat around the outside of the store, not up and down the aisles of processed stuff)

I look great, and feel great, and my numbers with my doc are fantastic!

Do it, you will not be sorry!

I'd say honey is ok, since it is a "whole food" sweetener, ie, not refined from something else. It's just honey. A close second would be maple syrup. Another whole food sweeter (mostly) – kaiulini Apr 27 2012 at 1:22

Welcome jess. Please check out:

They're similar but their approaches are a bit different and appeal to different people. Explore them both (and more) and try which ever approach works for you. If you're a reader pick up their books.

A good cookbook is always a good idea as well.
- I really like Everyday Paleo. It's simple and I need simple. http://everydaypaleo.com/

There are a ton of good blogs out there too. Here are a few:
