Hi, I'm trying to get back into ketosis after a week of horrible binging. I normally stay in ketosis with under 50g of carbs a day--it really helps me shed fat and control my appetite, as I'm about thirty pounds overweight. I can jump-start ketosis by limiting myself to only meat and cheese and not a lot else, and it only takes two days. I thought that this time, though, it might be fun to try something different: like a high-fat, very low carb smoothie made in my Vitamix using full-fat coconut milk, macadamia nuts, coconut butter and coconut oil with lots of ice. I could add whey protein, and make enough of it so it's my only food for the day. Does this sound good? Just thought it would be fun to mix things up a little. I've been really disciplined, but fall off the carb-wagon every five or six weeks.

Do the nuts blend well? Seems like they'd sink. – Rob Apr 26 2012 at 23:00

The macadamia nuts will definitely blend. I'd add a protein shake or a tiny amount of cocoa powder for flavor. If you're not too worried about 5g of carbs, an avocado will thicken it up nicely.

Check out Primal Toad's website for a whole slew of primal smoothies:

Well, I'm sure it'll work, but to be honest I don't think it sounds "good" (as in delicious)... I'm also biased because whey doesn't agree with me.

Personally, I'd prefer to eat the macadamia nuts (That way you'll get to feel like you're chewing something :) and make the smoothie out of the coconut ingredients and maybe toss in some cinnamon for a little zing...

If you do blend it all together, please let us know how it works :)

My shake (most mornings as I don't have/make time for eggs, etc anymore) is the following:

  • 10 oz unsweetened regular (I don't lke the vanilla flavor) almond milk
  • 2 scoops ON Whey Protein (48 to 50 grams protein), usually vanilla or chocolate flavor
  • 1 or two TBSP coconut oil (I melt it and pour into almond milk, personal preference)
  • Few drops of liquid stevia
  • Couple ice cubes (your choice, I add after oil/powder/milk are mixed well, less oil clumping)

Doesn't hold me over the whole day (like I think you're looking for), but works for me.
