How would I buy a blood glucose meter? I'm 18 years old and don't have diabetes. I just want to monitor my glucose levels(thinking about entering ketosis again). Where would I go get one and do I need a prescription? My dad is a diabetic so he got a free meter and got free strips. Does the monitor come with strips or would I have to pay $60-$80 for them seperately? If I happen to get one soon, what are normal blood glucose levels? My dad came home from work 2 weeks ago and immediately checked his glucose and it was at 5.2(alot of you mention 2 digit numbers, is that in America?), he said it was too low and immediately ate an apple. I doubt that this was low, is it? What is considered too low and too high? Can you state some of your average levels so I can gage where I should be?

1. Head to nearest WalMart. 2. Go to area near pharmacy 3. Ask or find glucometer and test strips. 4. Buy them. Around 10 bucks for the glucometer and about 30 cents per strip (box of fifty) last time I checked. 70-100 is considered "normal" range - either when you wake up or before meals. After a meal 120-140 is considered fine. – Dave S. Apr 27 2012 at 18:33

In the US, we measure in mg/dl. In other areas, they use mmol/liter.

5.2 is about equivalent to 95, or towards the high end of normal. For a diabetic, eating something at that point might be appropriate if it would be a while before another meal.

Thanks for clearing that up. – Soul Apr 27 2012 at 3:51

You don't need a prescription.
I bought a breeze 2 on amazon, and get the strips from amazon as well (much cheaper than from retail drugstore).

A waking blood sugar for a non diabetic might be 88 before eating breakfast.

You can also buy the needle skin prick things (lancets) from amazon as well.

Don't share the needles with anyone (even your dad).

It's great that you are interested in this at an early age. Much better than waiting till your 40 and pre-diabetic like most americans will be.

Are there different units of measurement? You are saying 88 but the meter my dad has, only states 1 digit numbers for example 6.3 so what is the difference between them? – Soul Apr 27 2012 at 3:32
