I'm up late, not at home, have too much to do, and feel like eating chocolate cake and/or pizza. Not freaking paleo chocolate cake, either.

What can I stuff in my mouth to get my mind off of food? (that came out wrong)

Here's what I've scavenged from the urban jungle so far:

-Pickles

Here's what I wish I could find at this hour but there's no way Jeebus is going to provide me with these:

-Kombucha
-Herbal fruit tea
-Shiritaki noodles
-Sweet potato crisps
-Kimchi
-Jerky

What paleo foods have little or no calories and can be found at places such as...your local vending machine?

Sadly, Kamal, the time has come to eat a co-worker. I'm sorry it had to end this way. – Marcy Apr 27 2012 at 5:46

But was the co-worker grain-fed? – Sunny Beaches Apr 27 2012 at 6:10

The co-worker is likely grain fed, so it is imperative to find a slim one and supplement with fish oil. – Marcy Apr 27 2012 at 6:36

Paper, the edge of you desk or a ball point pen top are all really good low calorie snacks. If you need something to balance the methionine, you can chew on your knuckles. At the library you should be able to find some gum under the tables. At work, just turn your keyboard over and shake it out. I'm sure some goodies will drop. Lastly, eating your boogers is very paleo! – Dave S. Apr 27 2012 at 19:30

I ended up not eating anything, and woke up with a twelve pack and boundless energy. Not exactly true, but at least I didn't wake up feeling guilty and bloated. – Kamal Apr 27 2012 at 21:13

Hard boiled egg, seen these even at delis and truck stops. Canned fish. I keep kippers and sardines at work for lunch or emergency rations.

eating will probably only make you think of food more, and eating something plain and paleo will probably make you crave junk food more. So, i suggest doing something totally unrelated to food. Go for a walk, masturbate, take a shower, or do as many pushups/sit ups/pull ups as you can do in 10 minutes. Or, just do all of those things.

If you must eat, suck on some frozen grapes or fruit. It does a good job of keeping your mouth occupied for a while.

Hope that helps.

How does one masturbate without buying pornographic magazines or video tapes? Are there pornographic materials available on the Internet now? I must have been spending too much time reading paleo articles, must explore other facets of the world wide web. – Kamal Apr 28 2012 at 5:37
Haha. Use your imagination! (by the way your questions are brilliant). – foreveryoung Apr 28 2012 at 11:11
paleobating ftw! – the_real_cdodd May 17 2012 at 17:27

This is not exactly low calorie but 100% chocolate is hard to binge on. A little goes a long way and does seem to satisfy a chocolate craving IMHO.

I know you asked for low calorie foods but You can easily find nuts at pretty much any store. 90%(or the highest percent you can find) dark chocolate? You can even eat the two together lol. Maybe a can of tuna/sardines? Olives? You can buy jerky at most gas stations(but I guess they have msg in them). Hope this helps.

Post Apocalyptic Snacking, eh? I would skip the grain-fed coworker and go straight for the goods: cockroaches. You've DEFINITELY got 'em under the vending machines.

Or ants for that matter...

Um, a water bottle if your only option is the vending machine.

Pork rinds if you must.

I share this need. I like your list Kamal & eat many of the same foods under the same circumstances.

I'm offering both things that can be found easily --and those that require preparedness.

After dinner is such a challenging--and I think emotional time. I often WANT something before the day is done, before I retire, something to fix my ambivalence over what I did an didn't get done during the day--to crave a last dash of joy--before I start all over again tomorrow.

Lately I've been having a few celery stalks in the those last moments of what I call "the mouth" (not hunger).

Celery stalks

pre squeezed or fresh lemon juice from a jar w/cloves of cardammon in it. Mix w/seltzer water (keep bags of lemon on hand)

cucumber slices w/salt or soy sauce/coconut aminos

gray poupon outta the jar--a teaspoon here or there. Not proud of it but the intensity is satisfying

umeboshi plums--this can really turn off the mouth an shut it down for the night

sauerkraut

Fresh-ish dulse--soft enough to eat w/out water

seaweed salad w/konjac --similar stuff to shirataki noodles--from the Asian grocery store. Keep salad pre-made, on hand.

Oooh! Good suggestions. – Kamal Apr 28 2012 at 5:38
I second the dried seaweed suggestion for late nights when you get munchie. I did that pre-paleo my first year of grad school, and it really helped me stay up late. On the other hand, I was apparently low in iodine, so maybe that's why. Vitamin C tablets help, too. – Sara S. Jul 17 at 0:27

If you're not very low carb, I would have some fruit. It's high water content makes it very satisfying for me, and it digests fairly quickly for most, so it is better for late night snacking. I love grapes, apples, melon, and sometimes coconut water at night makes me feel full, and is pretty low calorie for the flavor and light sweetness satisfaction I get. But not everyone is the same of course :)

Fruit sounds good, and I have some at home, but none around the tri-block area that I can tell. – Kamal Apr 27 2012 at 4:45
Perhaps you could build an infruitenator. Where's Perry? – Dave S. Apr 27 2012 at 19:23

Actually pickles sound really good for tasty, munch-able low calorie goodness. But I love pickles.

If I were you I'd get a big ice tea and a bag of classic lays. And I wouldn't feel guilty about it either. Once in a while I just want some potato chips, PUFAs be damned. I'm glad they are gluten free.

But the only real solution to your problem is to be better prepared next time. Don't leave home without your jerky!

Another option might be to get some low calorie dip or make your own and eat any veggie you like in it! Broccoli, carrots, slices of bell pepper, etc.

I think you're out of luck with the vending machine unless there is fruit in there…but good to keep on hand veggies and guacamole, paleo muffins, egg "muffins" in many forms…even with pizza sauce. Clearly you need a kitchen but I make the stuff once a week and keep it to grab in the fridge.

Baby carrots. I'd say celery but the better point would be to nosh something marginally nutritive and eventually not eat for the sake of eating. Carrots have enough calories to register and squelch true hunger where celery would not.

Frozen grapes or melon balls might be a good option too. Same reason, and should be difficult to eat too fast.

I always carry in my purse, backpack, and for emergencies ...

1) dark chocolate 70-85%

2) little packet of raw almonds

3) Emmy's coconut macaroons (go easy no more then 1-2 in a sitting - limit to about 6 a week)

4) Paleokrunch bar

5) sardines (only for plane/train/car trips)

I work at a night club a few nights a week and always keep something low calorie for when I get home late at night!

-Water with lemon -Cooked egg whites - sometimes I will pre-make a mini omelette with 1-3 oz grilled chicken and eat it cold topped with salsa when i get home. -I keep a bag of hard boiled eggs in the fridge and pop out the yolks and dip the whites in mustard -Nitrate free/free range turkey deli slices 3 rolled in lettuce dipped in mustard and vinegar. -Any kind of roasted veggie (Asparagus, cabbage and brussel sprouts are my fav) made before hand in celtic sea salt and a tsp of cold pressed olive oil. -chopped veggies (cucumber etc.) dipped in balsamic vinegar or mustard.
