My skin isn't dry but the last time I went into ketosis (and first time also), my skin got so dry, my hands where dry and it looked like the "scales" on it were larger if you know what I mean. It was worse when I woke up. My lips also got really dry which they normally don't. I only use oil on my skin and normally it's great but in ketosis even the oil didn't help. Does being in ketosis increase your water needs? How much water do you drink if this has happened to any of you for your skin to not be dry?

Thyroid issues, just get in some carbs... I always wonder how people know they're in ketosis though? Are you all using the strips? – Korion Apr 27 2012 at 7:50

I guess is because once you don't eat too much carbs, you lose water from the muscles at the beginning. I think you should drink more water. But i'm not an expert, sorry.

a lot of the initial water loss is from the water molecule that is attached to the excess glucose molecules that are no longer present. from my experience with VLC you do need to increase water consumption in ketosis although none of the explanation i have heard ring 100% true for me. – sage_ Apr 27 2012 at 15:21

Entering ketosis does cause your body to get rid of sodium stores in your body, which in turn leads to increased waterloss, thus the frequent urination.

I experienced similar symptoms to this when I entered ketosis and I just upped my water intake significantly, and also put coconut oil on my skin after a shower (to lock in moisture) and before bed, but not too much, or you will feel slimey!

Bull. There is no link to pathological thyroid issues and a ketogenic diet.
