I began following a paleo diet at the end of August 2011. My menstrual cycle had been a steady 28 days for most of my life, but since December, all but one cycle has been shorter, typically 24 or 25 days long.

Has anyone else noticed a change like this? Could it possibly be related to my dietary change?

I'm 32 years old, and my diet before paleo included lots of bean or tofu based vegetarian foods and I would only eat meat a few times a week.

I've noticed my breasts no longer swell or get sore during the last week of the cycle. That change happened within my first month of eating paleo.

I plan to see a doctor soon to discuss this and other dysmenorrhea syptoms, but I don't expect the doctor to consider diet a factor.

I appreciate any insight you can share.

What are you eating? Are you eating dairy? Conventional or grassfed meat? How's your D level? – Dragonfly Apr 27 2012 at 13:28
I had been eating some dairy- mainly butter and some cheeses as I seem to be intolerant of everything else. I've had lots of coconut milk in curries, smoothies, on frozen berries, etc. Eggs several times a week, lots of salads with shrimp or crab meat, lots of grass fed ground beef, bacon, baked sweet potatoes, salmon or sardines here and there, and nuts and seeds. Chicken only on occasion. I don't know my vitamin D level, but I supplemented with 2000IU daily until about a week ago. I'm currently in the middle of a Whole30. – April Apr 27 2012 at 19:39

In my case, the shorter menstrual cycle was related to thyroid issues (T3). After addding the right carbs at the right time my cycle went back to 30+ and I slept better as well.

What did you consider to be the right carbs at the right time? I've been inconsistent, but I generally strive to stay lower carb until ovulation, then I allow more until the cycle is over. I primarily do this to help my mood in the pms stage. – April Apr 28 2012 at 4:30
basically I added more carbs at dinner, like rice or potatoes. My main issue was insomnia, the change in my menstrual cycle was an added bonus – wendy Apr 28 2012 at 9:28
