I'm trying to get off PPI's after 15+ years of being on them, but I feel like I'm having a lot of reflux. I know sometimes there's a "rebound effect" going off these drugs, but I'm not sure if I'm feeling that or a normal amount of stomach acid. What I'm feeling is pretty constant and uncomfortable. I've tried the smallest dose of HCL with and without digestive enzymes and that makes the reflux super bad.
As a side note, I successfully got off these last fall when I happened to be sidelined from activity by a broken foot. I had to go back on them when I started activity again. Any kind of metcon activity (Crossfit, pretty much any kind of cardio) brings on some bad reflux that lasts for days and I feel so awful that I don't want to eat. Even swimming causes reflux (I think from the way you have to breathe while swimming). How can I break the PPI habit when nearly any activity makes the acid almost unbearable?
I was on PPIs for about 10 years for GERD and a hiatal hernia. I'm not qualified to give specific advice but I can share what worked for me.
Timing and what I eat both influence whether and/or how severely I have GERD. Timing is most important; I never have GERD if I stop eating at 2 pm, rarely have it if I stop at 4 and may or may not have it if I eat after 4.
I can eat all the fatty meat I want, particularly beef, although sometimes if I have an unusually large serving I take a stomach acid capsule. I've even eaten beef at 7 pm without a problem.
Carbs are the trigger. I can usually get away with generous quantities of low-fructose fruit and low-starch vegetables--pretty much as much as I wish to eat. Rich fruit such as grapes can be an issue but, for me, the real trigger is starch. If I have sweet potato or a little rice I try to have it before noon. Since I don't have much of a taste for starch I usually stick to the low-starch vegetables and my favorite fruits are grapefruit and (ripe) bananas.
Note: Even when I start to notice heartburn, there's no comparison to when I was on SAD. When I first lie down I can have mild acid reflux due to the hernia but all I do is sit back up for a minute and take a couple sips of water. That normally takes care of it.
