How do you know it is leaky gut? Could you please tell me your symptoms? – VB Apr 28 2012 at 20:34

VB is right. Symptoms. Leaky Gut Vs. SIBO can have similar but not identical symptoms and white rice + leaky gut is probably ok. White rice and SIBO is not wise. – Satchmo Apr 28 2012 at 21:50

If you do try some rice then eat white rice as it is almost entirely glucose. – josh Apr 29 2012 at 1:27
I had a small case of candidasis but that's gotten better on a candida diet. Now I suspect I have leaky gut because I have developed some allergies (kidney beans, citrus). – jess Apr 29 2012 at 9:45
and, what is SIBO? – jess Apr 29 2012 at 9:48

I have digestive problems with gluten, dairy, and soy, but I have no issues with eating white rice. I avoid brown rice.

For two perspectives on it, see:

I would say probably not. Better safe than sorry. Best advice I can give, is to really be strict for at least the first 30 days. After that, you can start to introducing food like rice, potato, etc.

Cooked rice is pretty benign.

I have been on a diet similar to paleo but was eating oat bran and buckwhea,. whole 30 sounds like a good plan though, will definitely do it – jess Apr 28 2012 at 21:21

oat bran does not have gluten but has a very similar proteins that might cause issues for some. White rice is definitely the safest grain. Definitely go strict the first month. If still have issues you might want to nightshades, eggs (see Robb Wolfs auto-immune protocol). Otherwise you can start to tinker. – pbo Apr 28 2012 at 23:21

Rice is not a general irritant of the gut. It is considered a non-paleo item because it is a grain, and because it has low nutrient value per caloric load. You can eat rice....but probably shouldn't.

Not sure about you shouldn't. Coconut pancakes are not paleo, but a lot of eat them. Depends on your goals. If you are active and need extra calories, including carbs, white rice may be a great addition, along w/ potato, and squash for sources of starch. Trying to lose weight, than yes, I would avoid any calories that you don't get much nutrient value from. – pbo Apr 28 2012 at 23:23

I think this is the kind of thing that you need to do an N=1 test on. I know that a healthy gut can handle rice on occasion, but if you have an auto-immune disease or something similar then you may have issues with rice. Rice messes with my gut almost as badly as wheat even though it doesn't have any gluten. If you haven't done a Whole 30, then I'd do one and then do a rice test and see how you feel afterwards. I was never a big rice eater before I got sick though so I don't ever feel the need for it in my diet.

How do you know what that person's blood sugar will be after eating it? Some people can tolerate it better then others... – Lady_Arwen Apr 29 2012 at 3:34
Nothing to do with blood sugar, genius. Did you even read the first post? He's concerned with leaky gut, not diabetes. Derp – Roth Apr 29 2012 at 3:50
