See similar question here: http://paleohacks.com/questions/19738/purposefully-consuming-gluten-before-going-in-military#axzz1tJkHauH2

I am off to basic training in 3 weeks. From prior experience at my mess it is possible to maintain a fairly paleo-ish diet at in mess meals but due to things like packed lunches I will at times have no option but then to eat the food solely for its caloric value. Last time I was there my packed lunch consisted of two sandwiches, 2 cookies, a museli bar and an apple. Apple was great, the rest not somuch. Keep in mind it is only for 13 weeks so as soon as I can once out of that environment I'll be back on the bandwagon.

The crux of my question is to collate a series of techniques or hacks that will potentially minimize the effects of this food (SAD) and make sure it doesn't affect me in terms of potentially feeling like shit.

As answered in the above linked question, the advice was seemingly to add a little gluten etc back in pre-recruits in the hope of minimizing any shock exposure to the stuff. Good move? any else had any experience where they were put in a situation where the were forced to eat non-paleo?

I dont exhibit any true celiac/intolerance symptoms other than some mood/cognition issues and just the general puffiness/inflammation.

Thanks for your advice in advance.

dont worry about it too much bro, you will have more choice than you think when it comes to eating there – Bill1102inf Jul 8 at 12:11

Robb Wolf suggests that those in the military add a little gluten in daily to just get some exposure to it and like you said minimize the shock.

If you aren't truly celiac, I wouldn't worry about it too much but since inflammation could really mess you up, maybe you could try a few anti inflammatory supplements. Make sure you're getting your Magnesium, zinc, calcium, vitamin d and all your other minerals and vitamins to kind of suppress any dietary inflammation you are getting. I'm not sure how much you can do at training, with regards to supplementation. If you really wanted to suppress the inflammation you could even try something like ibuprofen or aspirin. Little riskay there, just a thought.

You won't have much control over your food, and if your caught with supplements they with be taken from you, and you will be disciplined. 3 weeks is a very short basic, you really don't have much of an option but to deal with it unfortunately, since the point of basic is to break you down and strip you of all possessions so they can rebuild you into what they want.

In that case, fight the inflammation with positive thoughts. Mind over matter... that sort of thing. – Chris Apr 28 2012 at 23:29

It is a 13-week-long basic in 3 weeks. – Anondson Apr 29 2012 at 2:10

I would allow two weeks to adapt...

might throw something small in this week and just keep a little bit in there... just a little something with dinner i'm thinking? some croutons through a salad or the like? – Aussiebloke Apr 29 2012 at 5:47
That will work. You might need to eventually throw a sandwich or two in there as well... – Eric Apr 29 2012 at 6:52
