After a healthy Paleo lunch or dinner such as chicken drumsticks (free range, organic of course) and a big salad I quite often feel like I would like a 'little something' just to round out the meal. I'm not talking here about a sugar craving or a desire to binge on a big slice of cake -- just something to complete the meal. So far I've found a little high quality chocolate can work or a piece of fruit like a pear (not bananas or oranges though), but not always. It's very common in different cultures to have a small dish at the end of the meal such as Turkish Delight or petit four, or finish off with an espresso, so there could be some wisdom here to be mined. I'm wondering whether others have this feeling after a meal and what they've found works. Also, in the spirit of listening to what our bodies are telling us, is this my body asking for a little boost of something to help digest the meal?

I do this too! I'll grab a few nuts or a dish of berries and cream or some such. Once I do that "little something" I'm fine and I may not need to eat for many hours. My hypothesis: I've probably eaten enough but the "eat" signal hasn't yet been turned off in the brain. Truth is, if I go outside and walk around or gab with neighbors the urge goes away just as well as if I'd gone ahead and had that little something. |

I get that feeling too sometimes where I need something to finish the meal. I find that a piece or two of dried fruit, Kalamata Crown figs are my choice, with or without some goat cheese or other soft cheese if I have it does the trick. |

I work in a store with a fantastic salad bar, and I like to finish my meals with two or three bites of grilled pineapple. It doesn't seem to stem from a craving for sweetness, and it gives me a quenched, refreshed sensation and a feeling like "Ah, recharging complete!" |

Tonight I had some frozen organic blueberries sprinkled with cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. The strong flavor from the spices keep me from wanting more than just that little bit. |

For the past week I have been boiling about 3 chicken feet in about a cup and a half of water with salt, black pepper, and turmeric and reduce it to 1 cup. I also add some butter to it and then fill it in a cup and drink it at the end of my meal. I might even gnaw on the feet itself(I love the gelatinous weird texture). |

sucking on a peppermint does the job quite nicely. Iced tea with lemon or a glass of wine are other other ideas. |

Greek yogurt w/ some fresh or frozen berries, or frozen berries w/ coconut butter. Dark chocolate, some mac nuts, and sometimes ice cream :) I can get really good quality local ice cream, w/ no sketchy ingredients. |

It all depends on what I want - it could vary among: 1) dark chocolate 70-90% 2) cheese 3) berries +/- homemade whipped cream 4) tree nuts |

I've tried to draw out eating times at dinner lately with my family (husband and two kids). I feel we spend more time talking that way, and less doing. (I really think mealtime is one thing we miss in modern society. Call me a traditionalist or Euro-phile, but it's one thing I LOVE about Europe.) Dessert for us is usually a piece of raw fruit or bowl of berries, sometimes with whip (dairy or coconut). Sometimes we have an espresso, or my husband and I will have a glass of wine after the kids start heading off to bed. I like having a little something, but I don't honestly care if it's sweet or even a small slice of good cheese. If I'm not hanging out with my family I rarely eat dessert. |
