After attending a Mov Nat workshop at Paleo FX and, later, a one-day workshop in my home-town (you can read about it here) I'm feeling EXCITED about working out for the first time in a long time.
I've been working in the Fitness Industry for nearly 10 years and have done it all (bodybuilding, "functional fitness", Crossfit, Oly lifts, boxing, mountain biking, etc.) and have found merit and benefit from each experience, but I feel like Mov Nat is not only an elegant synthesis of true fitness (broken down in into locomotive, manipulative, and combative skills and aptitudes) but it is also REALLY fun and liberating.
For example, I've been riding my bike around town for years, but now I stop to balance, jump, and climb onto things. I'm looking at the world around me with an eye for movement opportunities and ways to interact with my surroundings.
Anyone else into "natural movement"? If so, what have your experiences/challenges been? (Mine is that damn muscle up!)
I love MovNat immensely. After learning about it last year, I found a "running trail" by my house that went through the woods, with plenty of logs to hop and trees to dodge along the way, eventually reaching a river. At that point I would dive in (the water was often very cold, much to my enjoyment) and swim upstream until I got to a 15-20 foot waterfall. There was a tree right next to it that allowed me to climb to the top. Once atop that waterfall I would survey my surroundings and feel at peace with everything.
MovNat is a workout and therapy session for me. And it makes me so thankful I live in the forest.
I'm a CrossFit coach, and I've taken one MovNat session in Brooklyn. I loved it! My schedule is crazy, so I can't fit it in every week, but I definitely recommend it. I had a blast. Looking forward to trying to incorporate it more into my training.
I've never taken the session(s), but I try and do what I can with what nature provides. Some people look at me with a cocked eye, but who cares.
I'm fortunate to live in Chico, CA. We have a couple of creeks nearby, and one that runs through town. Starting soon and through the Summer, I'll take my townie and ride through the park (where the creek is) get a good warm up along the way, then combine pull ups, pushups, lifting heavy rocks from one spot to another, or build a damn in the creek, sprint/swim across the creek, and do it all over again. All the while staying cool from the water and shade. I do wear the five fingers though.
I get a kick out of watching the poor souls shuffling by on the DAILY jog looking more beat than rented mule. I smile and continue my monkey moves.
I'm currently recovering from a separated rib(s) injury from my last soccer game. :(

Hey Tony! You were in my Primal Playout group w/ Darryl Edwards...glad to see you took a MovNat course too.
I took a 1-day workshop back in January and then one of their sessions at PFX. It was a life changer for me too. In fact, I just can't bring myself to go through the motions of a regular jog or workout anymore.
I've found a few trails from my house that involve climbing trees, balancing on logs, picking up rocks, etc. I also meet up in a local park with a friend and we jam together. Whenever I'm at a playground with my daughter, I play on the equipment. I'm looking forward to some hotter weather when I can add in some swimming in the reservoir.
I told my husband that the only thing I want for Xmas this year is a trip to West Virginia next summer for the 5-day treatment. And someday it'd be nice to get to Thailand for the 7-day intensive.
Tony, since you are into fitness and such, have you considered working toward their new trainer certification?
