I have been doing crossfit 3-4 times a week plus netball game once a week as well as following the Paleo diet. I am worried i am not having enough protein so have recently be starting in the morning having a coconut milk, protein powder smoothy as well as before or after crossfit doing the same but i am worried i may be over doing it any suggestions and also after crossfit or netball even when having a protein shake or smoothie, then dinner i am still really really hungry, should i be eating more during the day?

What are you eating during the day? What are your goals? – AG May 1 2012 at 1:43
How much protein are you getting from real food? I get easily 200g of protein a day from chicken, meat and eggs, and don't need powders for it. It's healthier as well. You know, paleo. – Wisper May 15 2012 at 9:45

In case it was unclear: paleo protein shake is an oxymoron. – Wisper May 15 2012 at 9:45

Why is Wisper such an ass, I wonder? – pseudopaleo Jun 17 at 0:21

  1. Get yourself a big bit of steak.
  2. Chew it to a pulp.
  3. Swallow.
  4. Repeat step 1.

Post Workout Recovery from StrongerFasterHealthier.com ....free range , antibiotic free, paleo approved...it was the best thing I ever purchased for crossfit....I used water, but I also use coconut milk in the morning. I have the chocolate one and I like it...if your not a stevia user you may have a bit of an after taste...but if your going that often you certainly need a recovery shake...

Up-side to this product:it's grass fed whey, so about the best primal protein powder you'll find. Downside: gimme the steak instead! – Jen Jun 30 at 22:36

I agree with AG. It's important to have specific goals here, because otherwise our advice won't be specific enough for a good answer. Are you trying to gain weight? Lose it? Stay where you are?

Unless you're trying to lose a lot of weight, it doesn't sound to me like you're overdoing it. That being said, I find it hard to see how you're not getting enough protein. Throw in a bunch of eggs for breakfast, and have a bunch of meat for lunch and dinner, and you're probably at or above the 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. Track a day's worth of eating and run it through a nutrient breakdown website and see where you're at.

Then yes, I'd cut the shakes out. Protein powder can really spike your insulin, which is not what you want right now. Robb Wolf says that even for athletes he doesn't really recomend shakes because they have the tendency to help you gain weight. So I'd stick to real foods right now, and dial back the shakes. – CoachCanadan May 1 2012 at 12:19

If your issue is hunger, try adding fat--coconut oil--to the smoothie.

Daily brunch smoothie is my newbie lifeline: coconut milk, chocolate Primal Fuel, frozen berries, and roughly 2 teaspoons of Artisana coconut oil. I've found that the extra fat keeps me full until supper. I agree that it's not very paleo, but it works for me. I don't have a problem with weight loss: 25 lb gone since going paleo in January and still losing. I've gone from misses size 16-18 to 10-12 and am developing muscle tone.
