Since going Paleo and supplementing with fish oil and upping my protein intake I feel I smell horrific. It's actually getting to a point where I'm becomming quite self conscious about it because it seems to encompass me. Is it due to poor quality fish oil? Has anyone else experienced this? Is there anything to make it stop or at least subside?

To echo the majority: it's not the fish oil. If you're concerned or know that your fish oil is cheap, I recommend Carlsen's: I don't even get fish burps with it. Also, straight oil like Carlsen's is typically better quality than gelcaps, and one way or the other it needs to be stored in the refrigerator/freezer. If you're super stinky, it probably is excess protein. Ketosis will certainly alter your smell, but usually if it's on the bad side, that's excess nitrogenous waste that your kidneys are having trouble processing and excreting. This means you sweat ammonia and urea instead of peeing it out, which can make you smell like, well, cat pee. VLC is completely possible with relatively small protein intake (10-15%), as long as you're eating enough fat. Avocados, bacon, coconut oil, and mozzarella are easy ways to get more fat if you're having trouble (I know many of us struggle at first with figuring out how to eat fats without crackers or breads as a vehicle). |

Could be the fish oil, could be the protein, or it could be ketosis if you are fairly low carb. Try varying each variable to isolate the problem. For example, stop the fish oil to see if it makes a difference. If not, add back the fish oil and add some carbs, etc. Make each test one to two weeks. Frankly, I'm no longer a fan of fish oil supplementation. Just eat some fish now and then... And 15% of calories as protein is enough for most people. 20% for athletes is plenty. If you are seriously calorie restricting, then the percentage should be higher (so that the amount stays constant). And ketosis, well not much you can do about that except to add some carbs. If you are trying to lose weight, you can try adding a few carbs to see if you can still lose weight. Dr. Atkins suggested bumping up by 5g/week until weight loss stops and then backing off a little. YMMV. |

I had that problem when I was eating low carb, had to apply deodorant four times a day, went away when I started eating more carbs. Doubt it is the fish oil. |

What are your macros? If you've gone very low carb (ketosis) that's definitely will alter your scent. Excess protein means more nitrogenous waste, meaning stinky stuff excreted. Not likely the fish oil. |

I'm very pro on Omega3s, just not poor quality (oxidized) Omega3s. 'Rotten' food should always be avoided. I'll admit I'm a fan of Krill oil for Omega3 supplementation... but I'd prefer just to get it from Real Food. |

Maybe your fish oil is rancid? I have no idea if that can cause bodily stinkiness, but it's good to check it for rancidity in any case. If you have capsules, then bust one open and give it a good whiff and a taste. It should taste and smell clean and pure. Keep your fish oil in the fridge. |
