Male 27yo, 183cm, 86kg. Been on paleo for about 5 months now and I've noticed lately that I've been peeing quite a lot. I dont know when this started exactly, but I know it closely corresponds with me starting eating paleo. I don't drink a massive amount of water, 2L, sometimes more sometimes less per day. My pee is fairly bright yellow, but this is mostly due to Vit B that I take each day, by mid arvo it clears up a bit.

But I find that I sometimes pee once every hour to 1.5 hours. To put this in perspective, if I'm going out somewhere, I pee before I leave, then by the time I've reached my destination I need to pee quite soon again. This morning, between 9:30am and 12:00pm I peed 3 times. I was at uni at the time, I've noticed compared to everyone else in the class, I pee at least 3 times more often than them.

Anyone have similar experiences?

More salt...... – Bruno May 1 2012 at 12:04
When starting Paleo many people do lose water weight. – mac389 May 1 2012 at 12:13
2L is a lot and I would be peeing every 1-2 hours too if I drank that much water. Also if you eat fruit with high water content or drink coffee or tea too, that would add to the 2L of water. I would just try to drink only when your thirsty, not trying to fill the mythical 2L quota. – coffeeandcream May 1 2012 at 22:36
I've been aiming for the 2L of water mark for years and never had to pee this much. – Rob May 2 2012 at 3:53

Might be too much protein. Whatcha eatin'?

Most mornings I'll have bacon and eggs plus a protein shake with coconut milk and a raw egg, so yes, there is a lot of protein. But whats the connection with protein and being stuck to the toilet? – Rob May 2 2012 at 3:54

The more protein you eat, the more you filter through your kidneys, not necessarily a bad thing, but more protein equals more tinkling. If it bugs you, you could add more salt, up the fat, and lower the protein a bit. – Happy Now May 2 2012 at 19:32
I've had this same experience. I'd love to have more info on the protein-frequent urination connection. – Nala Walla Oct 2 at 6:32

All low carb diets have a diuretic effect.

Really? Got any references? (not doubting your advice just would like more info on this) – Rob May 2 2012 at 3:51
Me too. I've been bothered lately by having to pee very frequently, so I'd love more info on this, too. Seamaster, what do you know about this? – Nala Walla Oct 2 at 6:30

If you're running low carb, there's less glycogen in your body to bind with the water.
