Well I suffer from a dog allergy, meaning that whenever I visit my boyfriend who has a dog, I get a skin rash all over. It's usually not too bad, but since I started paleo it's gotten 50% worse.

Could it be the acidity of the meat I'm eating? I know that acidic foods make skin reactions worse...

how long have you been paleo and what does a day or two of your meal plan look like? – Johnny May 2 2012 at 14:13
a week now, and here it is!~ B:Goat Milk Kefir, Two Eggs, Bacon L: Chicken Livers and salad (lettuce, cucumber, avocado), (maybe more meat) D: Beef Steak and Steamed Veggies – jess May 4 2012 at 13:25
Since becoming paleo has the weather/environment changed as a coincidence? I know for environmental allergies, if the dog has been touching allergens (cottonwood, ragweed, pollen) it will get worse. Also it can be easier to develop skin rashes (itchier, last longer, more persistant) if humidity has changed. – JeJ Jun 13 at 5:51
Also the answers on this thread, particularly by Julianne, may explain why skin rashes may be more prevalent on paleo: paleohacks.com/questions/39586/… – JeJ Jun 13 at 5:54

Rashes are histamine related, extracts like grape seed, pine bark and quercetin are natural anti-histamines and will greatly reduce or eliminate reactions. If you do not want to purchase supplements try drinking lots of organic green tea, using turmeric and other anti-inflammatory spices and teas.

You are eating an extremely high histamine diet right now, kefir, bacon, meat, liver etc. are a no, if you can't break down histamine very well.

A paleo diet with ferments, meat, organ meats etc. doesn't work for people with histamine problems, and supplements like quercetin have only a minimal effect when you are pumping your body full of histamine through foods.

I ended up with a full body rash that took half an year to get better when I ate a diet like you are eating right now, I wish I'd listened to my body when the rash started to appear and stopped right there with the kefir, meat, and organ meats.

I think Paleo-type diets tend to cause rashes and other side effects in a number of people.

I myself experienced a persistent rash and small papules on my stomach for several months when restricting carbohydrates and sugar while losing 25 pounds. This was accompanied by intermittent constipation which I never experienced before in my life.

Eventually the rash went away, but came back for a few months a year later.

Even though I have continued for 18 months to eat significantly less carbs than I used to, I have concerns about whether this way of eating is actually very healthy for me, based upon the skin reactions I've had and the negative impact to my digestion.

It appears my "symptoms" are not unique.
