I made the mistake of buying frozen berries, and since I don't bake or drink smoothies, I'm at a loss of what to do with them. Halp!

Edit: so I ended up making some muffins. Those berries were taunting me.
2 bananas, 2 eggs, 4 tablespoons butter, 1/4c tapioca starch, about 1 cup chopped strawberries/blackberries, 1tb sugar, 375F, 20min.
Well, something like that anyway, I didn't write it down.

Was good, good, good. The bananas and the strawberries were actually pretty sweet.

It is never a mistake to buy frozen berries. And why don't you drink smoothies? I make mine with milk kefir. It's to die for. – gydle May 2 2012 at 10:37
Just eat them?? – JeezLoise May 2 2012 at 13:54
Maybe I grew up spoiled with great berries in my own backyard, but I can't stand frozen berries ;P – a mesmerizing trickster May 2 2012 at 18:58
I'm asking specifically about frozen berries. I know how to use fresh berries, but frozen berries aren't as good. – a mesmerizing trickster May 2 2012 at 18:59

Maybe you could give them to a friend? :) – gydle May 2 2012 at 19:14

There´s tons of things you can do!

If you do Dairy, throw them in Greek Yoghurt with some Cottage Cheese, blend and freeze = Best Ice Cream ever.

If you don´t do dairy, do the same with Coconut milk and some shredded Coconut. Cacao Nibs on Top, please.

Eat them Plain or with Coconut Cream.

Eat them with dark Chocolate chunks or Cacao Nibs.

Eat them with Cheese.

Sauté Onion in Butter, add Berries with little Water, boil them up, let them simmer till you got Berry Sauce, serve with Pork Chops/Chicken/other meat.

....

Eat them in a house. Eat them with a mouse! ;-) – NewEra May 2 2012 at 14:04
Seems when I use frozen berries to make a sauce, it becomes very bitter. have you had this problem? When I make sauce with fresh berries, it's sweet. Heck, even eating them out of the bag, they taste very bitter. – a mesmerizing trickster May 2 2012 at 19:03
I'm curious about the pork chops. Would you use warm spices like nutmeg or cloves? What side vegetables would be good, I'm guessing late summer vegetables? But late summer vegetables and warm spices don't go well together, hmm... Never cooked berries this way. Please let me know :) – a mesmerizing trickster May 2 2012 at 20:41
mine are not bitter? It´s a mix of raspberrys, currants, blueberries, strawberrys,... yeah, you can use onions, nutmeg, whatever you can throw into a chutney, side vegetables would be something like zucchini and asparagus for me :) – Severine May 2 2012 at 21:40

The obvious. Eat them straight from the freezer. I do this with blueberries all the time.

Or if too cold for you, microwave for 30 seconds to slightly thaw. Awesomeness. – JakeA May 2 2012 at 11:22
+1 Obvious answer is obvious! :) – Matt May 2 2012 at 16:59

Add them to seltzer water with a splash of lemon or lime juice. Add them to a Norcal Margarita if you're into those.

Crepes! Beat eggs with a little coconut flour, coconut milk and a smidge of honey, then make thin pancakes and fill with berries.

After having allowed 12 lb of honey in 4 gal of water to ferment for 3-4 weeks, pitch about 8lbs of berries into it to make a berry melomel. After another few weeks or so when fermentation is done, rack into bottles for however long you want to age the mead. When its ready to drink, enjoy.

Oh my God... I think this will become my new obsession. goes off to research more on this – a mesmerizing trickster May 5 2012 at 22:52
Glad I could help :) Using frozen blueberries actually helps as it kinda "pre-bursts" the insides allowing for easier breakdown in the ferment. FYI my next and only my second batch of mead is starting with "blueberry honey" (honey produced by bees pollinating primarily blueberry fields/crops). To which I will add...frozen blueberries. – wildwabbit May 6 2012 at 0:58

Frozen berries, slightly thawed make a great snack! At the resort we were at recently they had a cooler of frozen grape "shish kabobs" they passed out. I plan on keeping some in the house now!

I heat them up (either in a pan on the stove or in the microwave) and mix them in to greek yogurt... add a few nuts and some cinnamon and it's breakfast! :)

Heat them on the stove with a little water and a bit of honey to make a berry sauce. Put the sauce in yogurt, mix it with coconut milk, put it over meat...

Throw them still frozen in an omlette with a frozen creamy cheese. If it's done properly where the eggs are almost done when you put them on- then fold the eggs over- you get a sweet pocket. Absofreakinlutely awesome breakfast! You get that pastry breakfast without the pastry.

hmmm I've never thought of eggs & berries together! but what do you mean by a "frozen creamy cheese"? – Ruth May 2 2012 at 20:00

Blend or food-process them when they're still mostly frozen = sorbet!

I do this with an immersion blender and a splash of almond milk. A couple of drops of good balsamic vinegar is a nice addition. – Kation May 2 2012 at 17:39
Balsamic? Wow, that sounds interesting. If I were to add anything to berries, I would add Port wine.. – a mesmerizing trickster May 3 2012 at 1:04

Jello. if you do not want sugary jello buy the plain gelatin - you will need something for flavour other than the frozen berries like some other juice.. use the berries for the "cold water/ice cube" part of the recipe. ie boil the water-dissolve the gelatin-use some fruit, coconut milk, whipping cream, etc..for the cold balance along with the frozen berries. taste before you add sweetner.

raises eyebrows Wow, interesting, thanks! – a mesmerizing trickster May 5 2012 at 22:55

Put coconut milk directly on the frozen berries and mix. The coconut milk should freeze up a little bit and it's like ice cream with berries! Yum! :)

Or if you do dairy, pour heavy cream directly on them and mix. Love this stuff! – Kelly B May 3 2012 at 18:32

Sounds crazy but if you're making a burger you can toss some of the frozen berries and mix it up with the ground meat. Apparently, this also reduces some of the AGES formed while grilling the meat.

sounds interesting, will definately try that one! – Severine May 3 2012 at 21:11

Everyone's ideas sound delicious! Wrote most of them down for future reference. One of my favorites is frozen blueberries or strawberries mixed with almond butter.

Doesn't the almond butter just go clumpy when you add frozen berries to it? – a mesmerizing trickster May 3 2012 at 15:44

Cold Therapy obviously....stick those puppies down your pants....;)

Actually, berries much like peas do make a pretty good ice pack because they wrap nicely around the injury.

LOL, love it! But I never need a ice pack anymore, I don't get pains anymore. I used to do the Pea thing ^^ +1 for you – a mesmerizing trickster May 5 2012 at 22:49

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Though it seems most of those suggestions are about fresh berries. I already do all those things with fresh berries (except for the pork suggestion), but those recipes don't work well with frozen berries. It comes out too bitter. I mean, I like bitter things, I squeeze lemon juice straight into my mouth!, but bitter/frozen berries taste disgusting. When I try to make the same recipes with frozen berries instead of fresh, I try a few bites and just throw the rest in the trash.

I think I'll try some of those suggestions but add a lot of sugar to make the berries sweet like fresh ones. The crepe idea should go nicely with a very sugary berry sauce and some whipped cream.

Might try making the sorbet or ice cream, but I'm going to add lots of sugar to it. Found a recipe that looks good on CHOW.com

Also thinking of making a berry milkshake like Wendy's with whipped heavy cream and looooots of sugar, since the frozen berries are bitter.

I don't know. I might just make some muffins and bring them over to someone I don't like ;P Then again there's people who will eat anything... @_@

I don't know why you think frozen berries are more bitter than fresh. Generally they are better because they are frozen at peak ripeness rather than picked early for transport. – Kelly May 2 2012 at 20:07

Because I eat generally eat fruit in season (tastes better than way) and buy local. Grew up with berries in my own backyard. Guess I'm spoiled and have a fine palate, I don't think there's anything wrong with that :P Lucky me. – a mesmerizing trickster May 2 2012 at 20:34

Me and my latchkey city kid taste buds are about to eat the bejesus out of some frozen blueberries mixed with coconut milk and cinnamon. – Marcy May 3 2012 at 3:07
Enjoy :) More fresh berries for my farm girl tastebuds, hehehe. – a mesmerizing trickster May 3 2012 at 15:45

Eat them straight from the bag. All of them. Then repeat until satiated.

Eat them as a frozen treat on a warm day. It's like a popsicle! Yummy

We basically use frozen berries all the time in gin and tonic because we're too lazy or forgetful to make ice. It gives it a pretty pink colour and you can nibble them too.

I put them in glasses of ice water.
