Hi, I woke up ill this morning and so far I've taken a vitamin tablet, drank some warm water with lemon and manuka honey, eaten 3 big spoonfuls of coconut oil and drank a big cup of coffee

Would it be beneficial to IF until, say, a meal this evening? Is IFing beneficial while being ill? Or should I just eat less? I imagine it might be as it gives your body a break from digestion to focus on getting better? I plan to relax till this evening when I have somewhere I need to be

Cheers

It would be great to read some sources that support some of these answers. Has anyone found anything? – DanielleO812 May 2 2012 at 15:36

If your body says it's too sick to eat you'd better listen (because your body can un-eat that meal, if you know what I mean). That is a little natural IF.

But, If your body is hungry give it what it wants so it can heal. That's my opinion.

The old adage "Feed a cold and starve a fever" fits here. When you are ill, it is best to not eat. If you feel hungry, have liquids as you have done.

This works. If you aren't hungry, your body might know what it is doing. If you feel extremely hungry, which I often get when I'm sick, you eat. – Chris May 2 2012 at 14:35

I'm no expert but I remember reading in a few places that you should not fast while sick. Your body needs energy and nutrients from foods to heal. It's using more energy while you're sick than it does at normal rest. Fasting doesn't seem like a great idea if you're not well.

Digesting food takes energy and effort, so it is natural to fast and allow your bodily resources to be recruited in fighting off whatever is making you sick rather than breaking down food. When you get hungry again, eat, but I wouldn't worry about missing a few meals in the meantime.

I would say to eat if you feel actually hungry. When my stomach is growling, I pay attention.

IFing while ill is great. IF naturally boosts your immune system. don't be scared of "needing to feed your body", its got plenty of energy stored. What i wouldn't recommend is fasting for more than 24 hours

Growing up, my mom would force things like crackers and toast and 7up down us when we were sick. When I've been nauseous or under the weather lately, I've found that fasting generally makes me feel better faster. And when I'm truly hungry later on, eating that first meal can make me feel like a million bucks!
