I've posted on other threads on paleohax before that one of the results ive seen from going paleo is the complete absence of the white spots that for my entire 30 years had been on my fingernails.

Well, oddly enough yesterday morning I noticed that I have two whitespots back! One on the right hand ring fingernail and one on my left hand middle fingernail.

Now, Don't get me wrong, im not worried about it but im just wondering if anyone on here might have some ideas about white spots on fingernails in general, paleo's possible affect on them, and why, all other things being equal, they are back when I havent changed anything im eating. Thanks as always.

There are many myths surrounding those mysterious white spots on fingernails that occasionally show up, but the simple truth is that the majority of white spots on fingernails are likely caused by a previous minor injury to the nail bed. They can be loosely compared to bruises on the skin. Note that this is not major trauma to the nail, that would result in Black/blue or loss of the nail entirely.

Occasionally these white spots may be the result of a zinc deficiency, though it is likely that other signs of zinc deficiency, such as hair loss or a slow immune system, would be present as well.

Hope that helps.

Yeah, squish your fingernail in a door and then you will see a few white spots! A nasty rap on top of the finger will do it too. – Eva Oct 6 2010 at 3:10
yeah, makes perfect sense: about a week ago i was moving kegs (i work at a bar) and i remember getting pinched a couple times. – ben61820 Oct 6 2010 at 13:03
Yes, I agree completely with minor trauma to the nail. I do dog behavior consulting for behavior modification and training and when I get a dog with a hard mouth, I get white spots on the fingernails of the fingers that deliver the (food) reinforcement. I generally use my right hand to deliver, but sometimes my left, and so I get many more spots on the thumb, index and middnle fingers of my right hand. – Sandra Brigham Feb 26 2012 at 14:43
