I am planning to ultimately be grain-free, but in the mean time (as I try to drop a lot of weight) I am considering doing a few months on the perfect health diet. As I add a small amount of rice into my diet, what is best? Wild rice or brown rice? Or something else? Any info would be appreciated!

I dig sushi rice. it's white rice, and it's sticky. It's fun to eat. easy to eat with chopsticks if that matters. – ben61820 May 3 2012 at 21:56

White rice as it is hulled and has less antinutrients

I eat white basmati rice. One, it smells great when it's cooking, and two, it's higher in amylose than amylopectin (thanks Alton Brown!) which means it's a little lower glycemic index wise than shorter grain rices.

I eat white basamati,,for the same reason. I did pick up some white jasmine as well to try. I always eat rice with protein and/or broth. – AmandaLP May 3 2012 at 19:48
Everything I've read says jasmine is much higher on the GI scale than basmati. But it's probably fine in a meal. I always eat mine with protein and at least 1T of a fat. – Beth-WeightMaven May 3 2012 at 23:45

Wild rice or brown rice?

/me dons pedantry cap

Wild rice is not a true rice, and is a unique grain -- even the stems of the plant can be eaten. While it's still a grain (it is still a type of grass, like all grains), many lump it into the "pseudo-grain" category with quinoa and such, since more of the plant is edible than just the grains.

When I eat rice or wild rice (the only grains of which I eat seldomly), I prefer wild rice. It has a great, natural flavor. I can't speak to rice's flavor, since I'm not sure it has much of one. ;-)

Between white and brown rice, I tend to stick with the party line -- small amounts of white rice are OK. If I eat a sushi roll, for e.g., I'm not going to remove the rice inside. ;-)

Some good italian risotto rice are very carefully processed. Usually not even mixed with anything else than this specific risotto type rice. They age them somehow too.

We eat wild rice occasionally. It is more like a seed than a grain. You can find it at Whole Foods, or even a Trader Joes. When it is cooking, it smells like dirt, but tastes delicious : )

I'm in agreement with the wild rice or white rice as your best options. For an even better boost, cook the rice in bone broth instead of water. It tastes phenomenal.

Never thought of doing that. Doh! – Tikivana May 3 2012 at 20:13

If you are concerned about gut health and avoiding leaky/inflammation gut white rice is best. It is considered a "safe" grain.

Brown rice as it is still a whole food.

So what? Whole wheat is a whole food too. – Christopher Gagnon May 3 2012 at 22:50
