I've been reading a lot about the diets of Inuit, Masai, protein sparing modified fasts, etc. I'm curious, does anyone have information on their stool? My diet is low carb, fatty to moderately fatty meat, fish, fowl, and eggs. I usually eat a big salad every day, but if I skip it, even for one day, my stool turns into little nuggets and feels scratchy as I pass it. Are these primarily meat-eating cultures just dealing with extremely hard stools?

Edit: Lacking a salad, the next day my stool is a 1 or 2 on this scale. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bristol_Stool_Scale

"Scratchy" is bad. The last thing you want is an anal fissure or other related issue.

Vegetables with soluble fiber (e.g. sweet potatoes, zucchini) will help take the "edge off" that stool. Do some research, and find which veggies work for you, depending on how low carb your diet is. Stick with the salad for the insoluble fiber / roughage -- and chew fully.

Running a month or so course of probiotics really can't hurt (although it may not be as helpful as a bit more soluable fiber). A good portion of stool should be bacteria and bacterial-waste, so if your gut flora is low, a course of varied-culture probiotics may help, too.

Check out the Primal Parent's post on poop. She is/was ZC to VLC.

I eat lots of probiotics. I get that I need to keep my fiber up. My question should maybe be rephrased: how are these people not suffering from hemorrhoids and fissures etc?
