I'm presently trying the auto-immune protocol, dairy-free, nut free paleo diet.

I vitamix a smoothie with 1 can coconut milk, 6oz spinach (cooked first in .5oz coconut oil), and 1/2 cantaloupe (12oz).

It makes 3 servers, each with: 25g fat, 18g carb, 7g protein

I'd like to increase the protein content, but am not yet ready to try commercial protein powders because I'm trying to limit variables as I trouble-shoot a pesky remaining health issue. Because I'm nut, diary free, adding almond butter or whey protein are not options for me right now.

Question:

What whole, paleo friendly food can I add to my smoothie to increase the protein?

(I suppose I could eat 4oz of ground beef first, then drink the smoothie. The idea of blending in beef into a green smoothie doesn't sound appealing).

Thanks for any out-of-the-box suggestions, Mike

if you can get over the ick factor, boiled chicken breast. Blends up nicely, and it's not that bad if you mix it with plenty of other stuff in your smoothie.

Otherwise, eggs or egg whites?

EDIT: November reminded me of alternative powders, you can get beef protein isolate or powdered egg whites. I haven't had these and I don't know if they're good or not, so the links are just some suggestions.

You can buy the egg whites in cartons, and just pour them into the smoothie. Can't really get pastured eggs that way, and I wouldn't be taking the only the whites from pastured eggs anyway, kind of defeats the purpose of getting them. – Bristlebeard May 5 2012 at 13:05

Neither. Egg yolks. Just toss a couple in there and blend it up. If he's trying to avoid common allergens, he shouldn't be consuming raw egg whites. Cooked egg whites, maybe. – Roth May 5 2012 at 13:27
I initially ruled out raw eggs due to safety concerns, but I supposed I could toss a hard boiled egg in there. Maybe, depending on how much fruit, I might not be able to taste it. Excellent suggestion!! Thanks! – CaveMan_Mike May 5 2012 at 17:19
This might work for you - Egg Whites (pasteurized) eggwhites-international.com. Scroll down for reviews and info. Haven't tried them but was considering them for a while. – MeepsIsWellfed May 5 2012 at 17:46
I like the idea of boiled chicken breast. I'd have to get it ground up pretty fine.... Oh, you could use baby food.... – November May 5 2012 at 18:25

hemp hearts..If you can forget they may not be "Paleo" a healthy diet/body is important..not so much if a food is explicitly Paleo

I did hear you say no powder. However, if whey is the thing holding you up, there are some powders that are dairy, soy, gluten, and sugar-free.

PaleoMeal DF http://patient.designsforhealth.com/PaleoMeal-DF-Berry-Cream I use coconut milk, PaleoMeal, fiber, raw spinach, 1/2 cucumber, 1/2 sour apple, and some coconut butter. (heavenly!)

There's also VegaOne http://myvega.com/ Which I haven't tried, but my chiro is quite into it. Dairy, soy, gluten, and sugar free, with greens already powdered and added.
