As much as I've found reasons why not to go Paleo, I've generally found multiple ones why I should at least try it. With this past weekend being the final straw.
About a year ago, I was diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis (sp?)
I figured it had a lot to do with a lousy diet, little exercise, and my beverage of choice, Pepsi. I'm a sugar junkie, Snickers bars, jelly candies, etc.
Add to all that, but I also get something where I would get egg burps, followed by bloating, gas, diarreaha, and lately projectile vomiting, for about a day, day and a half.
After lots of research, I figured it had something to do with bad bacteria in my gut (SIBO?), a lack of good bacteria in there, and lately a lack of stomach acid, as when my gastro put me on Prilosec for GERD, my egg burp/vomit fun increased quite a bit. 3 episodes within 2 weeks, whereas before, I would only get it a few times a year, not always vomiting.
Needless to say, I quickly dumped the Prilosec, although I do use the inhaler when I get the spasms in my esophagus. I don't want to take any meds at all, who does?
So, about a month ago I started taking flow yoga. I figured it would be a good way to reduce stress, strech myself out, and ease me back into working out again. I'm taking Vinyasa, which is a bit more vigorous than Hatha. Anywho, I felt great, as when I'm working out ( I used to lift 5-6 times per week, thus the yoga to stretch myself out), I tend to eat better.
I was eating eggs and fruit for breakfast, little more lax at lunch, but nothing horrible. Added protein shakes, vega sport for snacks, occasionally nuts. Dinner was generally a shake, or salad with protein and nuts.
I know its not totally paleo, but it was a start.
Onto my reason for taking the Betaine. I figured that I had some good momentum working, and read in several sources that my GERD was caused by a lack of stomach acid, contrary to what my doc said. He also felt that the EE was caused by GERD, but he said that he wasn't sure.
I bought some NOW foods Betaine, I've liked their brand, and started taking it last week. Thursday with bfast, no reaction. Popped one right before my bfast of eggs and fruit. Nothing at lunch, and then had one before dinner of Chipotle (better than how I used to eat, with a Pepsi (I know, I know). Needless to say, spasms, GERD, etc. Did I take it incorrectly? I know the pop wasn't the best move, but I got cocky, as I hadn't had an episode in awhile, and was treating myself for the progress I was making. I've read different ways to take Betaine, before a meal (NOW foods); after a few bites; and at the end of a meal (Twinlabs)
It's easy to point to the pop, but I'm just throwing it out there to see what responses I'll get from those who've had similar symptoms or diagnoses.
I'm at the point where I will move to a Paleo diet, at the very least try it for a few months, to see where this goes. I'm just sick and tired of dealing with this.
Hopefully, Paleo will increase my stomach acid production without supplements.
Any help, suggestions (keep it decent, I'm not looking to get bashed for my choices above. In fact, it was the written attacks of some people posting on Paleo sites, that turned me away from this lifestyle.)
