What is everyone's thoughts on Dark Chocolate Almond Milk? I just started paleo and I am trying to find suitable "sweets" if I need them. I used to have a glass of chocolate milk between my sprint and lifting sessions. Quick and easy, I was wondering if this almond milk would work as a substitute?

If you're looking for a recovery meal, you could probably do better. Almond milk doesn't have much protein (unlike dairy) and really all the cartoned chocolate almond milk has is sugar. (There's something like a tablespoon of added sugar in each serving I think, based on the last time I looked at the unsweetened almond milk v. chocolate stuff in the cartons.) I personally feel you'd be better off getting some 85% dark chocolate and just eating that, maybe with a banana or spread of almond butter. Less refined sugar that way. |

If it's the kind I'm thinking about it's not 100% Paleo, if that's your concern. I think that Silk has one, and my kids drink it and love it, but it definitely has some added cane sugar in there. If that doesn't bother you (it doesn't really bother me since my kids pretty much burn off food ten seconds after they eat it because they don't stop moving) then go for it! |

Read the ingredients list. If it is the one im thinking of its full of a laundry list of stuff. Try and stick to the rule that if a 3rd graded could not read the ingredients than you should not be putting it in your body. For the most part almond milk is a no for strict paleo eaters. In fact there are more benifits in regular chocolate milk, as far as replenishing your body with sugar and carbs post workout. |

Blue Diamond makes an unsweetened chocolate almond milk that is my go-to with a packet of Truvia to give it that sweetness. Yes there are some interesting ingredients, but short of making almond milk from scratch and adding cocoa powder that is the best that is ready-to-eat. |

I use the Silk almond milk in coffee about once a week. I'm under no delusions that it is paleo, but I can't do dairy, so it's the only way I can enjoy coffee outside the house without carrying coconut milk with me (they sell single-serving almond milk at the Safeway, which also contains the only local Starbucks. Very convenient). Recognize it as a cheat, don't allow cheats to take over your diet, and you'll probably be fine. |

Haven't had it yet, and don't know what the ingredients are... however, have you tried making your own? Either melting homemade dark chocolate, or a low-sugar dark chocolate, or cocoa powder... and mixing it with a safe natural sweetener like Truvia or pure Stevia? I actually haven't tried making my own either, but as I read your post, it made me think of it... lol. If and when I do try it, I'll make another comment here, or talk about it on my blog. :D |

I can't remember the brand name, but it is very good! It was pre-packaged in a box, with "pure cane sugar"... yes, sugar by any other name is still sugar. But 120 calories per 8 ounce serving it has a very good taste, and claims more calcium than cow juice! Given, the pros versus the cons when compared to cow juice, the cane sugar can be over looked this one time. I found a receipe online for Dark Chocolate Almond Milk where it did use stevia instead of sugar, and unsweetened Almond Milk, so I plan on trying that next. If you are not a hard-core anti-sugar person, and have a craving for chocolate milk, it would be a great alternative to the dairy version! |

Stay away from Blue Diamond. They use carrageenan in the ingredients listing. It is a known carcinogen. :( stay with Silk. |
