I've been doing paleo for a month now. I have noticed a decrease in acne, I even had zero PMS acne. Although lately, my face and hair are super oily! I haven't changed my skin/hair regimen since I started paleo and maybe I need to, or maybe my skin is just adjusting. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I shower and shampoo every other day, which will change to once a day as it gets hotter here (Arizona). I wash with facial wash every other day and moisturizer after that because my face gets tight from it. On the days where I don't wash my face with soap I use a cloth with water. This has generally worked but lately my face has become and oil slick, but aside from that looks really good! My hair has been an embarrassment. Oily hair shows up really really easily with my blond hair. I used to be able to shower and go all the way through the next day with my hair remaining clean. Lately, I can only go one day. I don't think it's heat because this is the first year it has happened and I remain indoors on most days. Any ideas? Will my hormones level out eventually? is this just the way it is?!

I too had this problem. I stopped eating bacon every day and it decreased dramatically though I have always been somewhat oily throughout my life. Are you possibly over eating fat? Perhaps your body is pushing the fat/oil out through your pores becuase it doesn't know what else to do with it? Just an idea.

The oil cleansing method helped me a lot though I am still somewhat oily by the end of the day. I cleanse once a day at night before bed and then splash water on my face in the morning and lightly towel rub/blot it. After the first couple of weeks I stopped needing moisturizer (coconut oil).

I still have to wash my bangs/the top of my head every morning in the sink or take a shower but I've always been this way. I still use regular shampoo. Perhaps your oil production would reduce where you to go to a pooless hair washing regime.

I don't know what causes oily skin or if you can treat it but I can give you suggestions on how you can control it. What really worked for me is I stopped using moisturizer. It just made my face even MORE oily. It didn't take very long for my skin to get used to being without moisturizer. The first couple of days, I had patches of dry, flaky skin but now my skin is perfectly fine with just a few splashes of cold water. But my skin still does get oily, especially more so during the summer. So I always carry with me Boots Expert Shine Control Papers and rip a piece off and rub it all over my face when it gets really oily. The only ingredient is calcium carbonate (which are naturally found in shells). I've seen some other oil absorbing sheets that contain mineral oil. I'm not a dermatologist or anything but that's sort of contradictory, don'tcha think?

I had the same issue when starting paleo late January. My percentages run about 65% fat, 20 - 25% protein and about 10 % good carbs. I eat about 50 grams of carb a day for weight loss. I had some zits and my face felt like I was a teen again. Now after about 4 months, I am probably a bit oilier in my complexion, but not much. My skin seems smoother. I do need to pay a little extra attention to my hair. I haven't braved no shampoo lifestyle, but am thinking about it.

I think the extra oil in my skin now is healthier than my previously dry skin. Alaska is notorious for dry winter air, but I didn't need any type of lotion this year. I think a little patience will lead to your body using the extra fat for good skin after you get used to it.

What's your carb and fat intake like? Are you restricting carbs?

Are you taking any fish/flax oil supplements? Are you consuming much PUFAs?

I eat about 1400cals with a 25/50/25 breakdown. I am pretty much always under 100g, usually around 80g carbs and it is mostly fr fruit. I add olive oil or coconut oil only when cooking. I take fish oil at night. – Sblueyez May 9 2012 at 5:55
