I'm a student, and, sadly, I spend a lot of time sitting. Before my primal blueprint-induced weight loss, I sat with my legs crossed (ankle over knee) quite often, and it took up to fifteen minutes for me to feel a change in circulation.

However, now that I'm eating clean and a lot lighter, my top leg falls asleep almost instantly. It's not a huge concern, but it happens at inopportune times. There have been times when I crossed my legs out of force of habit near the end of class and end up staggering comedically out of the classroom.

I'm not worried about health concerns, but it does have my curious. What causes this?

Weird. How long have you been eating paleo? When did this leg business start happening? – MeepsIsWellfed May 11 2012 at 16:34

You are likely pinching a nerve. Crossing your legs also impedes proper circulation and is not a good idea! (Pregnant women are advised not to cross their legs as it can cause problems for mom and baby!)

Yeah, man. Stop sitting with you're legs crossed- it's uncomfortable for everyone!

...Congrats on your weight loss.

Get it checked out. What most people call "cutting off circulation" is actually a nervous system issue -- but that could mean neurological as well.

How much have you lost? Your legs used to have more padding between the outside and the nerves, and now that it is gone, the nerves are more likely to be pinched when crossed.

This sounds like it describes it: http://www.drlamb.com/paresthesia.htm as does this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peripheral_neuropathy
