Not sure why you're craving it, but if you'd like to replace it try out Barney Butter almond butter; it's been the closest to peanut butter I've found. – jessecurry May 12 2012 at 20:23

just a 1/4 jar? give me a spoon and a couch and I could do the tub in no more than ten minutes.... seriously miss PB :( – mzrdnan May 12 2012 at 21:53
also just want to throw coconut butter out there if you are looking for a Paleo substitute for PB – JASmith May 13 2012 at 0:55
No wonder the Barney Butter tastes good, it's full of cane juice. And palm oil. – November May 13 2012 at 6:50

Eat more fat. 30g isn't nearly enough. I'm a medium frame female and I typically eat 80-100g a day. Lean cuts of meat matter most if you're getting conventionally-raised meat. If you're getting grass-fed meat, but cuts as fatty as you like.

Eat fatty meat, avocado, coconut, tree nuts (not peanuts), olives, cheese if you tolerate dairy. Cook with pastured butter, ghee, olive oil, coconut oil.

I find that eating avocados whenever I have nut butter cravings did the trick.

I crave PB too - I can eat a whole jar in a day. I think it must be the fat or the carbs. It's the same thing with straight-up nuts: I'll eat a huge package and literally not be able to force myself to stop.

My only solution is to avoid it entirely. Nuts and nut butter are not allowed in my house. Stinks but it's better than gorging myself on 2,000+ calories of PB every time I bring home a jar.

then you must understand how intense it can get lol! – mike May 12 2012 at 22:18

It's really hard to give a definitive answer without seeing your typical menu but it could be that you're craving the fat that it contains. Are you eating enough fat in general? That could explain it.

I know it's also not totally paleo but you might consider switching to almond butter just for the fact that peanuts are highly contaminated with aflatoxin.

i usually eat no more than 30g of fat per day except for when for when i eat PB which is usually like 80-100g, the cravings started to happen when i cut out all red meat out of diet 5 months ago – mike May 12 2012 at 19:41
Is there any reason you are limiting your fat intake and why you cut out red meat? No wonder you're craving peanut butter, it sounds like you're really needing some fat in your diet. – invisible ink May 12 2012 at 19:52

mike, the good news is that eating fat doesn't make you fat – patrick3000 May 12 2012 at 20:26

You might find that eating more fat will reduce your desire to eat "too much" of anything in an uncontrolled manner.. – Matthius May 12 2012 at 21:24

Your just consuming the wrong kinds of fats. Polyunsaturated/monounsaturated found in nuts is stored by the body where mcts and saturated fat makes you satisfied and is used for pure energy. Quit thinking meat should be lean. Your starving your body, leading to binging. I did this at first when I still thought fat was going to make me gain weight, it doesn't though. – Chelsea May 12 2012 at 23:56

I do not know but I do know that when I first gave up wheat, sugar etc..natural "peanuts only PB" was the food that satisfied my sweet tooth. Unfortunately it did not pull it. This time when I restarted VLC I avoided PB and have had zero sweet/carb cravings. Likely the fat is what you want.

is there anyway to prevent or stop the cravings? – mike May 12 2012 at 19:48

eat other fat..every time you crave sweet/carb/PB eat some other fat like a TBSP olive oil/Coconut oil etc..even cheese if you do that. I do cheese. – jo60 May 12 2012 at 19:56
I mean I do not avoid cheese not that I always eat cheese to kill PB . I had zero cravings for sweets within a week of substituing all carb/sweet PB cravings with some other fat (including cheese). Try it and see how soon the craving goes. I was surprised that I keep milk in for my Rooibos tea exclusively-which I have been drinking for 8 years day after day several cups /milk. Within a few days I noticed I had not had my Rooibos, and for the first time rather than running to the store for more milk, I did not even open my last carton. I simply have absolutely no craving at all. – jo60 May 12 2012 at 20:02
it has been like 5-6 months since i have had cheese or red meat – mike May 12 2012 at 20:12

I don't think it's the fat or the salt. I think there's something about nuts that make them very addicting to some of us the way wheat and dairy is to some. I rarely buy nuts or nut butters and never try to keep them at home.

my dad buys it, even when i tell him not to, he does it to piss me probably – mike May 12 2012 at 19:59

I just hope you're eating the all-natural kind, not the mass-market brands that have icing sugar in them (and are for that reason so much more addictive!) Also, have you tried switching to almond butter? Peanuts are not even nuts, they are a legume, which is not Paleo. Almonds are so much better for you.

I wonder if you're allergic to it. Before I was diagnosed with malt allergy (30 years ago), I was eating a whole loaf of french bread for dinner. (yes, yes I was) This is how I've been given to understand allergy cravings: Your body needs some nutrient in the food (in the case of peanut butter, very likely the fat). Because you're allergic, your body cannot get that nutrient out of that food, and then you crave more (because you still need the nutrient). I'm certain that's way oversimplified, but it helps me to not eat things.

NAET treatment is fabulous for food allergies.

I LOVE me some peanut butter, but it does not love me. I miss it like crazy. And almond butter just doesn't do it for me. I'm gonna look up the referenced almond butter suggestion in here.
