Insulin resistant people are top heavy apples. Studies say that due to an insufficiency of pancreatic beta cells the body loses the ability to regulate insulin and therefore become diabetic. Most obese people are prediabetic and most skinny fat people are as well especially if they carry most of their fat around the mid section.

There is an herb called the Indian Koni that has been shown the ability to regenerate beta cells in the pancreas. As well, if one does manage to regulate their blood sugar levels decently does it follow that they will lose fat around the mid section?

I am happy with my weight I just don't like where the fat is...so I'm going to regulate my blood sugar to see if that will redistribute my fat to where it used to go when I had more beta cells. I'm using the supplement made by Bell Lifestyles called Blood Sugar...it does contain Indian Koni and I have stopped IFing because it apparently causes insulin resistance in women and I have found that to be true.

I am a big believer in herbs now, but I know nothing about Indian Koni. If I were you, I would talk to some qualified herbal doctor to discuss this. Let me know how it turns out for you and thank you for the information! Good luck! – VB May 15 2012 at 2:47
Also, I believe, that if you manage to restore your body natural functions, including your pancreas, liver, etc, you will be healthier and more vital. – VB May 15 2012 at 2:49
Vivian, have you tracked your BG levels at all? I learned I was diabetic by tracking my own levels, but was not having symptoms. I tested (and still do) upon waking, 2 hours after beginning each meal, and just before bed. Though my numbers have drastically on the few weeks I've been Paleo, they are not yet low enough to stop the Metformin and Chinese herbs, Jiang Tang Wan, from my acupuncturist. I don't know about the fat redistribution, as age can affect us in ways we'd rather not. I have not heard of Indian Koni, but will definitely look into it. – MathGirl72 May 15 2012 at 2:55

VB, I agree with you completely and that is the ultimate goal. I read a lot for fun and hang out a lot in pubmed and pull a ton of information from reputable sources whenever possible from chemists, conventional and naturopathic doctors. Math girl, I have not tracked my bg levels but that is a good idea. I don't think I'm diabetic but I do know that I am IR. I also know that metformin will deplete b12 so please supplement so that you don't get peripheral neuropathy. Can you tell I want to be a nutritionist??? :) – Liloo May 15 2012 at 3:26

I wasn't aware of the Metformin/B12 connection. Thanks! – MathGirl72 May 15 2012 at 22:43

Cutting your blood sugar (especially a chronic level of sugar, i.e, snacking all day) definitely can't hurt. I don't put much faith in herbs and things though. I don't know enough about that herb you suggest to comment, but I still would advocate just trying to cut the sugar (carbs) for a while and see what happens.

One thing also that contributes to both insulin resistance and middle fat is fructose intake at a level above what your liver can process. Since your liver is the only thing in your body that processes fructose (all of your muscles, brain, etc, can process glucose) it can easily get overloaded. What basically happens is that when your liver gets overloaded processing fructose, it packages it up as fat and then tries to get it out as fast as possible which means storing it nearby (i.e., in your middle). So cutting sugar, agave, hfcs, anything high in fructose, may also have a big effect on where you store middle fat.

And finally, I read a while ago (I think it was linked from Melissa's blog, but I can't remember now), that the kind of fat dictates where it's stored (especially on women), that is, n-3 (EPA) fats are stored in the hip area, and the n-6 fats tend to hang out in the middle. Maybe that contributes to your issues too. I can't say, but it's worth doing some research on it.

I have done all I can when it comes to the good fats and cutting sugar...the diet is stellar mostly grass-fed and organic where possible. This is the last hurdle and I really don't think I can do any better when it comes to dieting--been primal (good fats/low carb) for 2 years now. The low carbing actually messed up my thyroid levels to where they became hypothyroid so I have had to increase my intake of carbs. – Liloo May 15 2012 at 2:48
Thank you for your thorough and thoughtful answer! – Liloo May 15 2012 at 2:50
Honest question: What do you put your faith in with regards to healing? – MathGirl72 May 15 2012 at 2:50

Herbs are very very powerful. I never believed it till I actually experienced that myself. Just so you know - herbs alone are more powerful than Paleo or any diet. – VB May 15 2012 at 2:51

Math girl I don't really have one modality that I put all my faith into...I do seem to gravitate more toward western herbalism, Ayurveda, TCM and some homeopathy. VB yes I agree with you that the right herbals can do miracles. – Liloo May 15 2012 at 3:31

Hi Crowlover, to follow up the blood sugar supplement did a great job of regulating blood sugar crashes but unfortunately after 1 month of use I did not experience any inch loss. I may not have been taking it long enough. I stopped taking it then started just cinnamon extract, co enzyme q10 and ala, on the second day I had an episode of critically low potassium and was hospitalized. It was stupid of me to take so many blood sugar lowering supplements all at once. Right now I am off all supplements, caffeine, dairy and wheat/gluten because of intolerances to prevent adrenaline surges. – Liloo Jun 22 2012 at 5:24
Those who are IR are also burnt out adrenally and need to prevent surges of adrenaline. Hypoglycemia, allergies, high sodium, stress, all cause surges of adrenaline in those who have burnt out adrenals. – Liloo Jun 22 2012 at 5:31
Good news is I have not gained weight even though I have a very equal fat/carb/protein intake. I will keep updating. For me right now I would just like to keep these panic attacks from triggering and heal my adrenals. – Liloo Jun 22 2012 at 5:33
Thanks so much for the update Vivian. So much to figure out. I hope it all works out for you. Updates would be great and I will check back here. I wish there was a better way to get updates other than posting a Question that is not really a Question or an Answer that is not really an Answer! Thanks a lot. – Crowlover Jun 22 2012 at 6:01
