Hello,

I know there are several threads on paleo + pregnancy, but I haven't found an exact answer to this question. Hoping you all can help!

I have been doing some research on paleo and pregnancy for future reference and I haven't found a lot of solid sources other than blogs.

Paleo mom's out there: where did you turn when reseraching paleo + pregnancy?

Does anyone have any sources that I can read regarding following this diet while pregnant? I'm confident this is the most healthy way to be, but I would like to offer my husband some reading material to help him support my decision.

Thanks for your insight!

Peggy at the Primal Parent is writing a book about Paleo/Primal pregnancy. Not sure when it is coming out.

In the meantime, Peggy's blog, my blog post on Primal Pregnancy nutrition (as well as my blog) and Chris Kresser's blog are good resources.

(Personally, I wish I could wholeheartedly recommend Chris' Healthy Baby Code, but we have a fundamental difference of opinion around recommending cod liver oil in pregnancy.)

I'd take anything Peggy says with a grain of salt. She's a bit too much for me, posting pictures of herself with captions like "this is the way pregnancy should be!" and boasting about her ridiculously low weight gain. She's also anti-vaccine, which after being married to a pharmacoepidemiologist and actually understanding how to properly interpret medical data... is just horrifically irresponsible. Read her stuff, of course, but just be discerning with the information she's giving you. – Sarah May 15 2012 at 18:35

Discerning parents choose vaccination, delayed vaccination or no vaccination, depending on their research/situation/child. No need to call them irresponsible. – Dragonfly May 15 2012 at 21:17

If there weren't so many toxins in vaccines, I may be more open to them. Though I'm not married to a pharmacoepidemiologist, I do know how to read and interpret data, both medical or otherwise, and I still choose not to vaccinate. And...I'm a pretty responsible parent. – MathGirl72 May 15 2012 at 22:20
Any reliable meta-analysis of medical data supports the majority of vaccines... Rotateq being a possible exception. ANY epidemiologist with reputable training will tell you the same thing. I was once on the fence about vaccines myself; having a child and actually having access to the foremost experts in this field in the world changed my mind. The anti-vaccine camps just don't have ground to stand on, and they put us all at risk with their reckless behavior. Do I choose to treat parents who don't vaccinate poorly? Of course not. But I do choose to stay as far away from them as I can. – Sarah May 18 2012 at 20:04

This isn't "Paleo," per se, but Sally Fallon (president of WAPF) has an outstanding PowerPoint presentation on the nutritional needs for a robust, healthy baby. It's terrific. (You may or may not be interested in the dairy stuff, but you can pick and choose what you think is important. Certainly lots of good animal fats!)

Their page on overall children's health also has a couple of articles specific to pregnancy and breastfeeding. It'll keep you busy for a while! Again, not technically Paleo, but of course, a world apart from the USDA/FDA/typical OBGYN/pediatrician recommendations. ;)
