Hi PlaleoHacks, how can this Paloe diet help me with healing me or even reducing the symptoms of Fibromyalgia? My sisters boyfriend had health problem he heard of the Paleo diet and did the diet and within one month he was better. He shared that with my sister and my sister shared that with me. Although before for many years I lived in the gym, I'm basically saying and ate almost like the Paleo diet and was fit. But in 2009 I was feeling so sick couldn't really express what I was feeling and going through, too many symtoms, no sleep, craying all the time, and developed episcleritis(redness and irritation) in my left eye. The Dr.put me on steroids for 8 months. I gained around 45 lbs., pain all over my body and sometimes I can't move. Therefore I stopped execersing. Now I some times use a cane, walker and even a wheelchair if I need it. I stopped and going to the gym. Now I had knee surgery and can't execrsice so I started to juice veggies and fruits with fiber and all. I need help and I'm willing to do anything to start living again. I have to get better so I can play with my three year old grandson.
i healed my fibromyalgia with the paleo diet so i highly recommend it. i recommend doing whole 30 found at whole9life.com i had to ease into it because it takes getting used to changing your habits... i eat a lot of grass fed meat that is fatty, bone broth, organic sauerkraut and vegetables. after a few months i was able to get off all pain medications and anti depressants. my joint pain all went away and i'm able to exercise. i also lost weight effortlessly. i make my own bone broth in the slow cooker. get some grass fed animal bones add a splash of vinegar, cover with water and let them cook for over a day then use that as a stock for soup. i'm not sure what else to share... sunshine without sunscreen is important too. read up on the paleo diet and follow it to a tee and things will change for you. it sounds like you did it in the past and it worked for you so you need some support right now to get back on track! best of health, d
Like J. Stanton says above, the Perfect Health Diet recommendations are great for fibro, but may take a few weeks/months to have an effect.
Other standard things to try for fibro include d-ribose, trigger point massage, and clinically-directed meditation. For example, Jon Kabat-Zinn's mindfulness training.
I'd highly recommend some posture work, whether than means buying a book (like Esther Gokhale's), going to a good PT, or trying one of the more alternative posture therapies.
Because sleep may or may not be a central impediment to getting better for fibro patients, some light therapy may be in order. Blue light blocking glasses or bulbs at night, blue light stimulation in the morning. Sleep hygiene be damned, fibro often screws sleep up too much for superficial things to work. Consider a memory foam mattress if you have cash, or a latex mattress if you don't want chemicals.
Paleo healed my Fibromyalgia and I couldn't recommend it enough.
I was neigh on bed bound, could hardly get through a day at work and was leaning on friends for any movement. My moods were dark and angry and I couldn't see the light. A friend got me onto Paleo and after disbelieving for a few months she convinced me that there would be no harm in trying it just for 30 days.
I now no longer consider myself a Fibromyalgia sufferer.
I live in New Zealand where Fibromyalgia support is lacking although I am fortunate enough to have a Doctor who leads the way, even internationally, in Fibromyalgia research. She is 100% behind my diet and has since recommended other Fibro patients who have had great success. The main thing which makes a difference is moving, yes your muscles will scream, but remember they aren't damamged they are confused. The confusion stops and they start to thrive on the exercise. I even started sprinting barefoot and lifting heavy things (including myself). I now walk about 2 hours every day and each step is a gift from the Paleo diet.
I know this sounds a bit extreme but I've been where you are and I cannot say strongly enough that the only reason I no longer am is because of Paleo. Please just try it, for 30 days - what's the harm right?
Oh - and as a side effect I lost 37lbs in 4 months.
In addition to a paleo eating template, I recommend you supplement with magnesium malate. Many fibro sufferers find that the magnesium alone makes a huge difference.
Note that other forms will not work as well: magnesium oxide is worthless because it's not bioavailable, and magnesium citrate has a strong laxative effect. Malate is the form you want.
I would also recommend things like 225 mcg iodine from potassium iodide drops, getting the RDA of selenium and copper, plenty of vitamin D3 (2000-4000 IU)...basically the Perfect Health Diet recommendations.
I have issues with one eye only too I have had scleriosis (poor spelling but where the outer layer detaches and wrinkles) plus the vision going up and down continuously and unpredictably. What I think fixed my eye issues was making sure all corn products were out of my diet. Not so much corn itself but corn starch, corn flour, where it is purified and concentrated. It is in a lot of products. Plus I think it is used a lot in restaurants, cause I seem to have eye issues a lot after eating out. Anyways I think this worked for me, probably just a quirk of mine, but you never know.
How long does it take for people with fibro to notice a different while doing the whole30? I have fibromyalgia as well as a host of other issues. Thus far, I am two weeks into a strict whole30, but I have yet to notice any differences except for light-medium headaches.
Any experience or suggestions would be a great help and motivator!
