A great place to find out about local farmers who deliver to your area or who have stands at farmer's markets in NYC would be the Weston A. Price Foundation website. Look up your local chapters -- they have all the good inside info on farmers who are doing things RIGHT.

Try the farmers markets. Most of the meat venders will tell you a lot about how the animals were raised. The Meat Hook and Fleischers will as well. Whole foods tends to be hit or miss if you can get any information about the animals, and the prices tend to be higher.

I live in northern Westchester and coordinate a grassfed meat buying group -- we buy grassed meats and other organic products from a Farm in upstate NY (Lewis Waite Farm). You order online and they deliver 2x per month from June-November and 1x/month during winter months. While I'm probably to far for your needs, I know that they deliver to CSAs throughout NYC. If you visit http://www.csalewiswaitefarm.com and click on the members can log in here button, you will see a CSA pull down menu. You might see a CSA there that you recognize from your neighborhood. Or give them a call and tell them where you live.

They are a really friendly and cooperative farm and farm humanely and work with about 20 farms from upstate NY and Vermont. I have been buying from them for a few years and their meat quality is excellent. They deliver all their meats vacuum frozen so they keep well and do not get freezer burn. They offer all types of beef, pork, lamb, goat, rabbit, duck and chicken.

They're not farmers but Fleischer's is one of my favorite butchers in NY. The Meat Hook is great as well.

Try the Union Square farmer's market. They're sometimes open in the summer on Fridays, but they're year round on Saturdays.

I've dealt with a few farmers there, but really liked these guys: http://www.grazinangusacres.com/ Ideally, if you want something other than burgers or hotdogs (which are really good), you should call them and ask'em to bring what you want (i.e. organs), then when you pick'em up, just tell them your name and they'll get your order from the truck.

They used to show up on Fridays too, which is too bad, because it's a bit of a long commute for me to Union Sq., so I just wind up ordering from northstarbison.com instead.

I first found'em at the Rockerfeller Center farmers' market which is only open July 25-August 31st Wednesday-Friday, near where I work, so it was very convenient, but they haven't been there in a while, and for some reason last year there were no meat vendors there, so had to take the subway down to Union Sq.

I highly recommend the company "Uddermilk" if you live in the NJ or NYC area. They describe themselves as a co-op on wheels and will deliver your orders to you once a week or you can go pick up from them on Sundays. They sell delicious grass-fed and pasture raised meats as well as raw dairy products if you do dairy. It does take a week or so to set up an account to start ordering.
