I have been wondering how long it takes to drop the cholesteral levels and trigs down to what I'm seeing reported here by others. Mine are through the roof, I would love to go in for a check up and shock my doctors, who keep wanting to put me on their drugs, which I don't want to take.

CHOLESTEROL 280 used to be around 350

TRIGLYCERIDES 297 used to be over 400

HDL 52 used to be 42

LDL 169 used to be 189

VLDL 59 used to be 75

don't have older results for these two only current

CHOLESTEROL/HDL RATIO 5.0

GLUCOSE 88

Considering that my cholesterol and trigs used to be much higher. I've managed to lower them on the Gluten Free Diet over the last 3 years because of my husbands Celiac Disease. However I am wondering if they will drop faster now that I am eating paleo, and how much faster? They have been stuck at the above for a while. I want to see them change for the better. Loosing weight would be a BIG plus too, lol! According to my height I should weigh around 135 for my age group. That means I need to lose 40 pounds. I still have a muscle hourglass shape, it just has some fluff to it right now that I would love to see go away for good! Besides exercise any tips on burning excess belly fat?

Ignore the BMI- what you "should" weight for your height depends on your gender, race, family, etc. Get a measuring tape and monitor how you feel (ex thighs larger, but hard with muscle). – JeJ May 21 2012 at 14:37
I lose weight (23 lbs) on a raw juice fast with plenty of blended veggies ( + 3 raw eggs and 1 glass of kefir [substitute real yogurt] per day). Mostly veggie juice. My trigs and thyroid improved dramatically in just 18 days, and my cholesterol is now spot on. The way I do raw juice fasting (as above), it is paleo, biochemically, and it works. – bachcole May 21 2012 at 16:31

How many carbs are you eating?

In the words of Dr Richard Feinman: "Dietary carbohydrate restriction is the single most effective method (except for total starvation) of reducing triglycerides, and is as effective as any intervention, including most drugs, at increasing HDL and reducing the number of small-dense LDL particles. Beyond lipid markers, carbohydrate restriction improves all of the features of metabolic syndrome."

If you try cutting the carbs you should see a rapid improvement in your blood lipid profile: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/37202414/Volek_ProgLipidRes_2008.pdf

But don't cut carbs out entirely if you would rather not live in a consistently high-cortisol state. – Kasra May 21 2012 at 13:49

An apple a day keeps the doctor away, or so I have heard. It also provides good, healthy carbs, as long as you keep to one apple a day. – bachcole May 21 2012 at 16:34

Go register at lecturepad.org and watch Tara Dall's presentation to the lipidology association. Pay careful attention to her case studies - you may find them highly relevant to you. It's about advanced lipid testing & understanding. You need advanced testing. Dr. Dall will give you the ammo to get that from your doctor; she always explains common results and what to do to resolve your issues. Your doctor probably doesn't know.

Of course your mileage may vary, but I coincidentally had labs done about one week before switching from vegan eating to paleo and then had to stop in at the doctor's office a month later.

In that VERY short amount of time, my HDL went from 38 to 73 and my triglycerides went from 135 to 57.

I was following the advice from Robb Wolf's book, by the way.
