I love this site. I think I'm addicted to it. This is only the second question I've posted mostly because 1) I can usually find the answer to my question because it has already been asked before, 2) I like reading the answers to questions that I haven't even thought of asking, and 3) I'm still trying to figure out how to navigate this place. So, on behalf of all newbies (I know, we are all relative newbies--but I'm a newbie-newbie) these are the questions I would like to know the answers to:

What is the purpose of the star (favorite question) by the question?

Is there a way that I can book mark questions that I find interesting for future reference?

How many times can I up-vote in a day? (There appears to be several different answers to this question: 10, 20, 25, and 30.)

What’s the point of up-voting comments if they don’t add to your reputation (not that I care)?

If I keep clicking on a question does that increase the number of views?

If I keep looking at my profile (not saying that I did) does that increase the number of views?

I have over 200 points. So how did that change the advertising that I see?

How do I tell if I’ve been down-voted on a comment?

I’m not especially computer savvy (I’m over 50 —I know, that’s a poor excuse). Why is the formatting reference so hard to understand? It would help if there were examples.

Must I choose an answer to the question I posed? If so, how much time do I have to choose one?

There's probably other questions that should be under 'frequently asked' but are not yet answered. These are just a few I have to start. Thanks for your answers.

What is the purpose of the star (favorite question) by the question?
If there's a number below the star, it tells you how many people have "favorited" this question. If you click it, it allows you to favorite that question.

Is there a way that I can book mark questions that I find interesting for future reference?
This relates to the question above. You click on the star; after you click it, it should turn orange (rather than being greyed out). To see the questions you have "favorited," go to your profile, and click on the "favorites" tab.

How many times can I up-vote in a day? (There appears to be several different answers to this question: 10, 20, 25, and 30.)
I'm pretty sure I saw a moderator state that the maximum up-votes in a day was 30.

What’s the point of up-voting comments if they don’t add to your reputation (not that I care)?
Because maybe it's an answer similar to what you would have written and rather than being repetitive, you up-vote it to show that this is a good answer. Answers with a lot of up-votes will be pushed towards the top of the thread.

If I keep clicking on a question does that increase the number of views?
I'm not sure, but probably.

If I keep looking at my profile (not saying that I did) does that increase the number of views?
Also not sure, but probably not.

I have over 200 points. So how did that change the advertising that I see?
I don't see how that would change the ads that you see.

How do I tell if I’ve been down-voted on a comment?
You lose 2 reputation points if you are down-voted for a question or answer you posted. You can check to see this by clicking the little envelope next to your username at the top. But as far as commenting on other people's answers, there is no way to be down-voted AFAIK.

I’m not especially computer savvy (I’m over 50 —I know, that’s a poor excuse). Why is the formatting reference so hard to understand? It would help if there were examples.
I admit, I get a a little confused by the formatting too.

Must I choose an answer to the question I posed? If so, how much time do I have to choose one?
No, you do not have to choose an answer. But you do get points for choosing an answer and if it's your first time choosing an answer, you also get the Scholar badge.

Yes, it's 30 upvotes per day. paleohacks.com/questions/116693/… – Paul May 22 2012 at 0:45

Excellent answers @April S. Regarding pageviews, I think that only your first viewing of a page each day counts, which prevents artificial run-ups in # of pageviews. Also, if anyone needs formatting help, they can ask a moderator either by flag or email. – Ed May 22 2012 at 21:05
cool beans, april! guess i'm going to go back and 'favorite' my favorite questions now! – MiMintzer May 23 at 1:01

Another question is why have the annoying f'kin Pop-Up everytime you look at this site. It's enough to make me not want to look. (Admin, take note!).

So, I am NOT the only one...which is what I was led to believe. Although - it appears to be gone now! YAY! – GHarkness May 21 2012 at 18:28

Don't log out and you will never have that problem again. – April S. May 21 2012 at 21:09
This makes me not want to browse on my iPad, iPhone, etc. I stay logged in on my PC, but fuck, this is so annoying it deters me from browsing sometimes. – Shawn May 22 2012 at 11:28

Well the good news is that the star is actually the way for you to bookmark your favorite questions. If you click the star to favorite it, you can find it again on your profile page under the "favorites" tab.

As far as I can tell, upvoting comments is just a nice way to say "ditto" or to offer support to the commenter.

You can tell if you have been downvoted by either clicking on the envelope next to your name at the top of the page and it will be shown under "summary" or "reputation" tabs or going to your profile page and clicking the "reputation" tab and you can see the total up and down votes listed in the table to the right.

I don't think you ever have to choose an answer to your question, if you don't want to.

Welcome!

It is cool and if you get over 10 upvotes on multiple cmments you can earna badge. It is mostly just a lot of fun.

It might have...

How do I tell if I’ve been down-voted on a comment?

No down votes on comments. Unfortunately....

I’m not especially computer savvy (I’m over 50 —I know, that’s a poor excuse). Why is the formatting reference so hard to understand? It would help if there were examples.

It is HTML which is the language you code websites in. This would be a good seperate question. Although I think it has been asked.

Must I choose an answer to the question I posed? If so, how much time do I have to choose one?

You should if you get at least one answer. THere is no rule that says you have to...
