I just started the Paleo diet today. My question is, what brand of almond butter is best? I currently use Maranatha but noticed on the ingredient list it contains "cane sugar" and I know sugar is a no-no. Do all almond butters contain sugar?

The best almond butter is none. It contains too much PUFA and antinutrients. – Dangph May 22 2012 at 6:10

I have a jar of Maranatha Raw Almond Butter in my fridge right now and the only ingredient is "100% organic raw almonds." So I don't know which one you have, but try to find this one: maranathafoods.com/product/… – April S. May 22 2012 at 6:46
If you are close to a Trader Joes, they have an unsalted, plain almond butter. Sprouts has the same in plastic tubs in the bulk section. Central Market (Texas) and Whole Foods both have grind-your-own varieties. Keep price in mind. $10 for 16 oz is a ripoff. $5/lb is more appropriate. – Michelle Sep 17 at 21:19
raw butter is worse, so its not even roasted (which would remove some antinutrients) and has even more antinutrients, the best almond butter if you MUST, get raw unpasteurized almonds, sprout them, roast them then grind them down. – Robert Sep 26 at 1:14

I buy mine at Trader Joes and it contains one ingredient - Almonds.

Most almond butter I see in the health food stores have one ingredient as well. Care to make some distinctions? – Dan Sep 17 at 17:59

Make your own. You can find recipes for it on marksdailyapple.com

at some larger Whole Foods locations they have grinders with raw or dry roasted almonds where you can grind your own almond butter. It's coarsely ground but I like it.

Earth Fare here has that too. It's so good compared to the jarred ones! They taste terrible next to fresh ground! – NewEra May 22 2012 at 1:06

This stuff tastes THE best: http://justinsnutbutter.com/

I've found that TJs nut butters are often rancid.

How do you detect rancidity? – coffeesnob May 22 2012 at 0:12
Yes, on the TJ's rancid almond butter. Just returned a jar. – Soporificat May 22 2012 at 0:29
The ones I've found to be rancid were really obvious, it's just an "OFF" smell. Not quite moldy, but musty almost. Hard to describe, but I think you'd know when you took the lid off... The raw ones are probably safer, but I've still had problems with them. – Simone May 22 2012 at 0:59
I'd describe the rancid nut butter as smelling a little bit like paint. – April May 22 2012 at 6:35
Paint? Interesting. So there is no chance I would have eaten rancid nut butter by mistake, right? – coffeesnob May 22 2012 at 13:39

I also think Trader Joe's raw almond butter is better than others. But if you can find sprouted almond butter, that would be the best choice.

I worked at maranatha inc. making peanut and other types of nut butters and we made them for trader joes. We just stuck the trader joes labels on the jars.

Little Lad's. It's from Maine, & it's so much better than every other nut butter I've ever tried. I just learned you can order it online. http://www.littlelads.com/Almond-butter.asp

the grocery store I usually shop at (in part) has a machine that turns almonds into almond butter before your eyes and the only ingredient is almonds. It is awesome but broken a lot which sucks. I used to have this kitchen thing I ordered online that I think was called the Magic Bullet (?) and you could make your own nut butters with it (I used to make my own peanut butter and almond butter-pre-paleo) so if you can buy something like that to add to your kitchen I would say the best way would be making your own at home. Then you could add some honey or whatever you want to it. Yum. I need to get another magic bullet...

Once I got this one - http://www.quailoaksranch.com/ - Just stayed with it. It is one of the very best.

Naturalmond is the freshest, comes in a glass jar (no plastic chemicals to worry about) and uses the best quality almonds. And of course, tastes the best, hands down!!! They are a small local (local to me in Atlanta) company but are growing quickly. They are about to sell almond flour too. Here is their web site http://www.naturalmond.com/purchase.html

Redmond's Peanut Free almond butter is the best I have tried. Almond only facility and they make it in Ohio and are growing. You can also buy it online. Very fresh and tastes great. peanutfreefoods.com

I ate Maranatha from Costco for a long time, usually with something else. When I started having some on its own, I noticed it had a really pretty awful taste. Sort of like a paint thinner smell and taste. Turned out I had been eating rancid almond butter for a long time. I kept replacing it at Costco, and each time I had a new one it was bad, too.

Got a Blendtec to make my own, and it fails. You have to add oil for it to work, and it heats it up really hot. Got the Blendtec special jar for $120 that does thicker things, and it still doesn't work well. Still gets it hot and the machine starts to make a smoking smell. It shut down once from overheating. Very frustrated with that product.

Was getting tired of peanut butter and came across this page. May try some of these suggestions.

By the way, I try to find raw almond butter. Look up roasted almonds and acrylamides.

Here in Barcelona (Spain) you can buy quality imported nut butters at organic market stores from the Monki brand. They are organic and really pure, just the nut thing.

As some have pointed, almond butter is pretty high in omega-6. I'd go better with hazelnut. But I'd even better go for cashew butter. And if you could find it and afford it, Macadamia nut would be definitive winner. At least for the low-omega 6 and low carbs. It would be also lower in protein content. It all depends on what are you looking after, I guess.

if you aren't worried about carb content, then you could also have a look at chestnut butter/cream.

Nuts should be the last food group you eat from. They're high in PUFA as stated, and anti-nutrients, just like the ones found in wheat and legumes.

Unless you can find macadamia nuts at a good price. They are perfect in every way. Still, do not make them a regular part of your way of eating.

The Marantha brand also makes a RAW version. You got the roasted one with additives. It also has Palm fruit oil and evaporated cane juice right? Get the raw version next time. It's organic.

Sprouted nut butter would be best to consume. A good website is: http://www.bluemountainorganics.com/store/index.htm

This website sells sprouted raw nut butters, but is pretty expensive. I have not ordered from the website myself, but I definitely will. Have a great day!
