Is it safe to give kids (ages 5 and 7) fish oil? I bought liquid omega 3 for my kids, it has total omega 3 fatty acids 1,150mg, epa 650mg, dha 450mg, other omega 3 fatty acids 50mg, i give them a 5ml serving daily, is it safe to give them this? will this benefit them? I give them fresh salmon 3 times a week, chicken and beef the other days, i heard it was good for brain development.

Is it safe? Yes. Is it necessary/helpful? That depends. Are they eating paleo? There's slight diminishing returns when eating paleo and supplementing fish oil. Or rather, the amount needed to supplement decreases assuming you're avoiding poor quality (read: refined) omega-6s. There seem to be all sorts of suggestions out there of the benefits of omega-3s in children. All potential upside, no downside, why not supplement? |

In my opinion, it depends on a couple of things:
Honestly, if they're not eating anything with much omega-6-laden oils, and you're feeding them salmon (I'm assuming wild) three times per week, I believe an omega-3 supplement is unnecessary. It costs money and some of it could potentially be oxidized. |

If they are eating 3 servings of salmon per week, save your money. We don't need a ton of EFAs, and I think avoiding an overdose on omega 6 is more beneficial than overdoing it on the omega 3. That said, I doubt there would be harm at that dose. But if they develop diarrhea or start bruising for no reason I'd drop the fish oil. |
