And I was wondering what I should eat instead of cake and ice cream. I am not lacto-paleo.

I have seen that there is a coconut ice cream available, but does anyone have any other ideas? It doesn't even have to resemble cake and ice cream; it can be anything birthday-ish.

I would say eat what you want but eat it, if YOU like it not cause it's "birthdayish". Make steak birthdayish or whatever ;) – Ikco Oct 14 2010 at 6:03

Plenty of gluten free mixes out there for a once a year gluttony. I don't stress anything but gluten for very rare occasions. As long as your day to day is on par... Enjoy your birthday. It's anti-stress. Don't complicate it, have what YOU like.

Just have it preferably gluten free and vegetable oil-free

Piece of proverbial birthday cake

this is a good point. forget all this 80/20, "cheat meal", etc etc. Its very simple if you just eat good paleo day in day out, live at least somewhat actively, think positive, get some love, etc. Then on the few holidays we have, a birthday here and there will have, I say, zero effect. Avoid gluten if you can, but i think daily clean living will afford us all the opportunity to live guilt-free, fun, social lives. – ben61820 Oct 14 2010 at 14:28

Chocolate covered bacon for the win.

You might find something suitable in the Sweets section of my Recipe Index.

I would recommend the Chocolate Sponge Cake, filled with fruit and coconut cream (there's advice how to whip it here on paleo hacks)

However, what I consider birthdayish is to be served my favourite meal, especially if it's at a fancy restaurant. My meal of choice is grass-fed steak served with buttery zucchini and wilted greens, at Rockpool in Melbourne :D

Flourless choc cake - but I don't need the sugar so much as I taste it in the choc - thats what we use for birthdays - not something I would have every wk but a few times a year ..

Sounds tasty. Where do I get it and is it made with any dairy? – Bkluffy Oct 14 2010 at 1:19

CHocolate covered strawberries. Also, my grandma used to do this thing where she would freeze bananas and then stick them in melted chocolate and the chocolate would instantly freeze coat on to the banana. Very tasty. Stick a popsicle stick into the banana before freezing for easier handling.

There are also a number of cake recipies using permutations of coconut flour, artificial sweetner, banana, almond flour, etc. Not perfectly paleo but better than a slab of sugar.

Heavy cream mixed with a bit of vanilla extract and some cacao is quite good when whipped into chocolate whipped cream. You can get by without any artificial sweetner, but a dash of stevia is nice also.

If you're not specifically talking about sweet stuff you could buy and prepare for yourself an extravagant steak with your favorite vegetables.
