Do you think unsweetened banana chips fried in coconut oil are relatively paleo-friendly? I just need something crunchy sometimes. If you have any crunchy snack ideas, do share. I can't eat too many nuts though.

Have you tried roasted plantains (spelling?) Trader Joes has them, they are crunchy, salty, and yummy! A lot like banana chips! – Theresa May 23 2012 at 0:36

Thanks, Theresa! But I think they are roasted in sunflower oil. So that's a no-no for me :/ – coffeesnob May 23 2012 at 0:44
BABY CARROTS! seriously, they get the job done. crunchy & delicious. – Laura May 23 2012 at 3:24
You are luckier than I am in your tastes Laura. I find raw carrots of nay kind disgusting. – Denis May 23 2012 at 11:38
Trader Joes is selling them now too. I find that sprinkling salt on them vastly improves their taste. – Kelly May 23 2012 at 13:42

Get the fancy grade dried coconut shreds (the fat shreds) put about a cup into a pan on med high till toasty brown. Toss with salt and whatever spice you like. I like salt and cinnamon or salt and smoked chipotle powder.

This is a new idea. I should definitely try them! Do the coconut shreds turn into crispy chips? – coffeesnob May 23 2012 at 19:07

They do! The parts that don't get brown stay a little bit chewy. You can just toast them longer if that happens! – Tracie May 23 2012 at 22:47

I LOVE them, but I cannot keep them around because it's too easy for me to eat 600 calories worth and still want more : / Crunchy things are tricky. I think we desire them because they remind us of SAD snacking, but other than nuts, there is not much in the way of highly crunchy food on a paleo diet.

A few things I eat regularly that might help fill the void: -guacamole on jicama sticks -celery/carrots with cream cheese and/or nut butter -yogurt topped with coconut flakes and/or chopped nuts -firm apple slices and cheese -Sea Snax Seaweed (not exactly crunchy, but something that really feels like a snack to me)

Hope that helps!

I know! I have always had a crunchy-tooth. I just have a thing for crunchy, salty things! Oh I've never tried jicama sticks... I should definitely try them. I love seaweed snacks! – coffeesnob May 23 2012 at 1:13
Maybe you should just follow the hunger and see where it leads. – Kasra May 23 2012 at 1:25
Kasra, following the cravings for crunchy, salty things always leads to overeating. But I am wondering if unsweetened banana chips are better crunchy snacks because they are pretty bland...and do not contain unhealthy oils. – coffeesnob May 23 2012 at 1:42

I think the unsweetened, fried banana chips (in coconut oil) at Whole Foods aren't a terrible snacking choice nutritionally, but I find them to be utterly bland. I buy plantain chips with chili and lemon flavoring (fried in palm oil) from time to time, but I can't recall the brand right now. I like dipping them in guacamole.

I used to eat them but after skipping a few days I noticed I didn't feel quite as good after having them for a snack. If they don't bother you, I would say go for it. The only problem I can see is how fresh the coconut oil that they make it in (aka not fresh and definitely not extra virgin) along with the inherent nature of frying starchy foods.

If you are looking for something to snack on that is psuedo-paleo you can do much worse. These are empty calories and carbs but the damage is minimal.

Also, check out the ethnic section of your grocery store (giant for me). I found some sweet plantain chips with 1g of sugar whose ingredients are only plantains, palm oil and sugar.

Yeah, I am concerned about how fresh the coconut oil is as well Which ethnic food would plantain chips would fall under? – coffeesnob May 23 2012 at 19:09
I'm not entirely sure since all the ethnic food was grouped together at my Giant. I assume Mexican or Peruvian. Somewhere in that general area. – Denis May 24 2012 at 11:38

i eat gluten free veggie chips; the ingredients are just sweet potato, carrots, onions, green beans and palm oil. they taste amazing. i usually take out the green beans to make it more paleo friendly!

Green beans aren't the devil. marksdailyapple.com/… – invisible ink May 23 2012 at 1:10
I did not know green beans where not paleo. I thought they where a vegetable not a legume. Go figure! – Cave girl novice Diane May 23 2012 at 1:10
Fantastic! Where do you get them? – coffeesnob May 23 2012 at 1:13

The brand is Sunwell and I get mine from my local grocery store's (HEB) gluten free aisle! – Abbie May 23 2012 at 16:26
Thank you, Abbie! – coffeesnob May 23 2012 at 19:09

A lovely crunch is making your own kale chips or frying up some lotus root chips or sweet potato chips. But for a quick grab and go if the sugar content doesn't make you crave more (it does me) then why not. It's all about what works for you.

My kale chips always come out soggy and burnt on the edges... I should try making lotus root chips/sweet potato chips though. Do you fry them in coconut oil? – coffeesnob May 23 2012 at 1:10
Either coconut oil or palm shortening. Either works great. – Karin May 23 2012 at 6:13
