I love coffee, but suffer from candida and I can't (don't want to:) stop my daily cup of coffee, so I bought an organic one and put a coconut oil and cinnamon instead of milk in it. I have only one not very strong cup per day, if I am studying for the exams, like these days, maybe I'll have two for better results and stamina (it really works for me). Unfortunately I realised, that I have really STRONG hunger after drinking a cup of coffee, even if I am full and have a good large lunch or breakfast right before. What is going on? feel anyone a similar effect? I'm worried about because of my candida, i don't want to feed the little yeasties from elevated sugar levels in my blood. thanks for answer!

If you're just putting cinnamon and coconut oil into your coffee, there should be no BG rise nor insulin response. In fact, cinnamon should make you a bit hypoglycemic. It's probably related to what time you're having coffee and whether or when you're having breakfast or lunch. In other words, it has more to do with the BG/insulin response of the meal eaten prior to coffee consumption: coffe itself should be neutral but will be crowded out by any large meal eaten prior. – Namby Pamby May 23 2012 at 13:47

Caffeine produces mild insulin resistance which raises blood sugar in clinical studies. – Dave S. May 23 2012 at 13:52

I am always hungrier after drinking a cup of coffee. I make "bulletproof" coffee...whir up hot coffee in the blender with 3 Tbs grass-fed butter and 1/4 cup coconut oil. It keeps me full for 6 or 7 hours. – MathGirl72 May 23 2012 at 14:05

@MathGirl - I would hope that keeps you full for that long! That's a lot of fat! (Not that there's anything wrong with that!) ;-) Between the coffee and 1/4cup of coconut oil, I'd be bouncing around like a pinball! – Amy B. May 23 2012 at 15:41
@MathGirl - I am in love with that recipe! Can you tell me how many oz. of coffee you use? – Pete May 23 2012 at 15:55

I run a 16/8 IF every day (in other words, I skip breakfast). I can stretch that out to 24 hours without any hunger. I'd consider myself "fat-adapted", generally LC, sometimes VLC, but the absence of hunger seems to persist even after carbohydrate-filled breakdowns, like a long weekend in Austin with civilian hosts who take you to Juan in Million.

I have 40 ounces of medium strength black coffee every morning, and it doesn't affect (cause) hunger, so I'm concluding that coffee doesn't universally cause hunger.

Your post had me mildly concerned, as I started reading about coffee and insulin resistance, so I did the only prudent thing...

...found another paper that I liked better.

Good luck.

I think it's probably more likely that the coffee is stimulating hunger through more straightforward means: like stimulating stomach acid.

Or they're mistaking the acidic feeling in their stomach for hunger pangs? – NewEra May 23 2012 at 13:38
Stomach acid really causes hunger pangs? I thought it was hormones. – Christopher Gagnon May 23 2012 at 15:07

Coffee works the opposite for me!

Me too. I don't eat breakfast, but have a big cup of coffee with lots of half and half (revoke my paleo card now), and that is like a meal for me! I'm not hungry again for a long time! – NewEra May 23 2012 at 13:38
Ditto, but only if it's with milk/cream/half and half. I don't think coconut oil and cinnamon would be quite so filling, or satisfying. – KellyBoBelly May 23 2012 at 16:04
Actually, the coconut oil makes it VERY satisfying. It's the fat in the cream that keeps you full. – MathGirl72 May 23 2012 at 19:18

It stimulates hunger because you are consuming 'something' telling your brain to get ready for more. It stimulates hunger because it affects insulin and insulin sensitivity. It blunts hunger because of the caffeine stimulant.

All around, its a hell of a drug.
