So, like many other women out there, I am ravenous while on my period. I have been eating clean for about a year and even at my most vulnerable moments, non-Paleo foods never even cross my mind, so I have settled into a routine of just allowing myself to pig out (cleanly) during these couple of days guilt-free, and as soon as it's over things naturally go back to normal.

My normal diet is meat, eggs, veggies, and a bit of fruit and nuts on occasion, never crave anything sweet or more complicated-- except during my period!!

So my question is this: what is your decadent, ultra-satisfying (Paleo) snack/concoction of choice when your hormones are going wild and all bets are off?!?!

I just ate a mondo heaping bowl of plain full fat Greek yogurt and mixed in a sliced banana, a few drops of stevia, cinnamon, and some broken up squares of Lindt 85%. It tasted like sweet, creamy GOLD- truly divine. (then chased it with a couple ounces of salty mac nuts.)

So what cravings do you find yourself indulging in on your period???

Pretty sure I eat this once a week :) – DanielleO812 May 25 2012 at 12:49

A big batch of cauliflower fried "rice" a la Melissa Joulwan (Well Fed). Except I replace the pork char siu with heaping mounds of bacon. It's a good thing.

That sounds delicious. Maybe I'll try something like that tomorrow! – MissBrenna May 24 2012 at 4:07

Full fat yogurt with frozen raspberries or cherries with some raw honey on top. Also, dark chocolate!

One of my favorite meals is bison burger with avocado, bacon and sauerkraut wrapped in lettuce with a side of sweet potato french fries!!!! Finish with a bar of dark chocolate with sea salt or bacon. Occasionally served with wine. YUM

I go buy myself a hunk of brie cheese, some bacon, and a Granny Smith apple. Slice the brie, slice the apple into fairly thin slices, and fry up the bacon. Then I make mini "sandwiches" with an apple slice on the bottom, then a brie slice, then bacon on top.

Alternately, a big bowl of frozen blueberries with coconut milk (I live in Miami so sometimes I'm really not up to eating something hot on top of the weather).

Some version of low-carb meat and non-starchy veggies (usually red meat) often in a bone broth!

ex: bison and mustard greens, lamb and spinach, goat with veggies stew, fish curry, burger with guacamole, etc.

I stopped craving sweets based on my menstrual cycle when I supplemented properly with trace minerals like selenium, iodine, magnesium, fish oil, B Vitamins, and C Vitamins. PMS is an inflammatory state so I try to eat cleaner and exercise when I'm on my period because otherwise I pay for it! Mood swings, carb cravings, bloating, gas, acne, IBS-like syndrome (constipation alternating with diarrhea), and cramping all reduced by 70-80% on low carb Paleo. The last 10-20% reduction came with proper supplementation.

I still like sweets occasionally but when I do have them it's twice a week after post-workout like berries, mint leaves, and cream or Paleo dark chocolate brownie w/ mint and, whipped cream, or coconut muffin with berries and cream. I don't increase my sweet consumption during any particular time of the month.

In the SAD days, I used to have moderate PMS, sometimes horrendous cramps, and always -IBS, acne, and carb cravings from Hell- that just made it worse!

Before I knew about paleo, I tried a diet with two rules: no animal products, and no fat. (very sad.) When I was bleeding, I would find myself at the greasiest spoon, ordering the biggest cheeseburger (and I was/am allergic to dairy). When I learned about the Blood Type Diet it finally made sense. Then, also pre-paleo, I used to have massive cramping and pain and intestinal troubles on my period. Somehow, in desperation, I discovered I could tolerate chicken. I would get one of those grocery store roast chickens, bring it home, and tear into it with my hands like a cavewoman.

Now, I'm quite happily minus my uterus, so don't notice that time of the month so much.

Past those days now but back then it was Reese's Peanut Butter Cups! If that was still a problem today I guess I would have to figure out how to make it paleo--dip my 85% dark chocolate in almond butter?

I like to make an 8oz beef burger (well seasoned) and serve it on a salad of shredders (SNL '98) - shredded iceberg lettuce with homemade mayonnaise, and I'll add onions, pickle chips, and mustard. I usually crave fat and salt more than sugar and fat, and it's heightened around that special time.

Kitfo. It's an Ethiopian raw beef dish, made of hand chopped meat mixed with spiced butter. To die for.

I need to try making it myself with pastured beef & butter....

Oh my god! Kitfo is my favorite food on earth! I make it at home all the time with raw beef that has been frozen at least two weeks to kill the bacteria. – tbunchylulu Nov 4 at 11:51

Salt and meat. Dill pickles and the pickle juice.Very confused on something..Bacon? Yes or no? I see so many Paleo dishes wit it in it but then when I read the lists of Paleo foods Bacon is on the list of what not to eat because of added sodium and nitrates. I've been loosing weight, but am I dooming myself by eating bacon?
