What are the best eggs to buy?

I know pastures and bug fed are ideal according to PaleoApproved. This raises the omega 3 ratio. Can't find bug fed eggs in NYC.

But flaxseed fed pastured also have high omega 3.

Discuss.

The omega-3 in commercial flax-fed eggs usually has alpha linoleic acid (ALA) which isn't well used by humans -- conversion to usable omega 3 is low.

Obviously pastured eggs are the best. When I can't get them I go for free range, and up my green/orange vegetable/butter intake to make up for it.

I find it hard to believe that in NYC of all places you can't find pasteured eggs. Try localharvest.org to find a famrer's market, vendor, etc where you can buy them -- it's worth the extra $$.

Pastured = bug-fed. – Matt May 24 2012 at 13:02

Definitely. NYC is loaded with farmer's markets that I'm SURE have the eggs you're looking for. And like Matt said, pastured implies they're out roaming around on pasture, where they're eating grass, bugs, and grubs -- the little critters crawling in the grass. :) – Amy B. May 24 2012 at 13:10
ALA is not useable omega-3? – Matt May 24 2012 at 13:16
Thank you. Good points. – ThinnerStrength May 24 2012 at 13:17

Legit pastured free ranging hens will eat LOTS of bugs and worms and little snakes and even rodents - no worries!

I think pastured still means fed grains, but they find bugs too. – ThinnerStrength May 24 2012 at 13:12

Yeah I've been there. Most pride themselves on offering 100% Vegeterian feed, but are pastured. – ThinnerStrength May 24 2012 at 13:16
100% vegetarian feed is just a marketing gimmick... chickens aren't vegetarian, but I guess they get their "meat" out in the pasture. – jjtitus May 24 2012 at 15:52
Vegetarian fed means not feeding fish meal, bone meal, feather meal... stuff chickens never would encounter. Unlike, say, seeds, grasses, etc... – Matt May 24 2012 at 16:13
