So I came across this INCREDIBLY irritating article in Jezebel today taking the piss of paleo/crossfit and calling it a 'fad diet'. What do you guys think?
she conflates raw diets, evolutionary biology (yeah, Jerry Coyne, f-u and your 'science' There are no lady evo biologists! Just men with convergent evolved pecs!) and paleo with the rhetorical habits of her own tribe of self-righteous critical-theory mongers. That aside, there is much to the idea that what people cite as the science behind how they eat is not really settled at all and entirely contingent on the individual.
according to her, if you see improvements in your IBS symptoms from changing your diet, you're 'a privileged fad dieter,' and not making an honest effort to make your life better. And that is probably it--ideas that aren't immediately congenial to the modal progressive's normative RX for the world will be seen as antisocial and antagonistic to our nature as social animals. We should all actually try to not give weight to that idea by not being zealous dicks about whatever we're doing to people who aren't into it.
The article is obscure, brief, and devoid of intelligent argument, so just ignore it - it's not worth arguing with everyone in the world.
It didn't bother me at all. I stopped thinking of how I eat as a "caveman diet" a long time ago. Frankly, I agree with the article more than I disagree.
Yeah, it's pretty bad. I've stopped caring about things like this, when the author clearly doesn't even understand the basic principles of what we do. Yawn.
I thought it was funny, and did not think it was calling ME out... I'm a scientific self-experimenter, who loves real food.
I kind of agree that the 'becaue cavemen did it' is a hyper-simplistic answer.
I thought it was pretty funny. I think we need to make sure we never lose our ability to laugh at ourselves. We do have some whacked out people in this community and they deserve to be made fun of. A little criticism can be a very good thing. It keeps us from getting a little too out there. Keeps us honest. Keeps it real.
I think its true. I eat what makes ME feel good!
I am actually leaning towards eating everything in moderation including grains. Due the fact that i feel better when i have my occasional cheat pizza. If i start feeling bad i will back up and see what works.
VLC paleo I feel is a must as a baseline especailly for overweight metabolically messed up people. It worked awesome for me for 7 months then it stopped working. I felt the garbage as i pushed through figuring it would work it self out. Then on day i had a carb binge cheat meal and the next day I felt better then i had in weeks. So i started playing with things and I feel awesome again in about a week of moderate carb.
I also agree that people can thrive on any diet aslong as a majority of it is from unprocessed foods. The issues with populations not thriving seem to be when the go away from there natural diets to a part SAD diet.
Eat real food and move a lot I think you will do well.
