I would like to be Paleo, I understand and agree with the precepts of the Paleo diet and I have digestive issues that I want to address, but after 40+ years of Vegetarianism, I don't like meat! Except for some fish, a little egg and ghee I don't like the taste, look, ethics, texture and chewiness, smell (esp bacon) of animal foods - what can I do? How can I be Paleo and healthy if I don't like and perhaps don't digest meat?

Isn't Mark Sisson's wife a pescatarian-ish just 'cause she grew up vegetarian? If she can make it work, I bet you could. :) – red_leaf May 26 2012 at 0:37

To digest meat you just need to increase the acid in your stomach (if needed), eating an orange before dinner for example, works. As for not liking meat, start with less crude meat tastes: chicken breast. Then move to turkey and other parts of the poultry. In the meantime, work on getting used to more fish. Even if you don't manage to like meat at the end, always put your faith on fish. After a while, you can try lamb, goat, beef, and maybe some offal.

Another way to get some of the nutrients required, drink lots of bone & meat broth/soups. Maybe try some ground meat, which is less chewy. Make Greek meatballs: lots of mint, oregano, onion and garlic (they take the meaty taste away), olive oil, salt & pepper. Make 1" meatballs, fry them in coconut oil. You can then eat them as is, or cook them an extra 5 minutes in tomato sauce and have them with threaded spaghetti squash.

A lot of people only eat fish and eggs. I started out that way for close to 6 months. I just started eating chicken, and a little red meat once a month. I only eat organic from the best possible humane sources. There is no reason you have to eat meat. I hate beef, but I actually like buffalo. Just take it slow. If you think you have a problem with digestion try apple cider vinegar after you eat meat.

You're eating fish, ghee, and eggs? I'm not sure I'd worry too much about other meat if you hate it. Of course, someday you may want to eat beef or pork or poultry--but I honestly don't see why you'd need to. It seems pretty balanced to me if you're eating those three things. Those are all animal products and should give you all the amino acids and animal fat you need.

Milk, cheese, ice cream, gelatin, bone broth, however much fish and eggs you can eat.

Keep on doing what you're doing then. You don't HAVE to eat meat! Just avoid the grains, sugars, beans, etc.

So eat fish! If you're concerned about ethics, look to buying local fish/meat/eggs. They're much more likely to be humanely produced.

If you really want to expand your palate, take it slowly. Add meat gradually back into your diet, at your own pace. Many people have foods they don't like, and that's perfectly fine.

If you eat fruit, veggies, tubers, coconut products, etc, then just a smidge of fish, ghee and eggs will take care of you and you'll do great. Just stay away from grains, legumes and non-ghee dairy. Make sure your ghee is from grass-fed cows, easy to find on-line. Enjoy!

I'm a happy meatatarian. I like my big, bloody steaks. But I see absolutely no reason why you couldn't do paleo as a pescatarian, especially if you eat eggs and ghee. Seafood and eggs are excellent protein, and ghee is a great, versatile fat source. And if you don't have dairy intolerances, some full-fat yogurt and cheese can add variety (and you may be able to find humane, organic sources easily, depending upon where you live).

Staying away from grains, legumes and added sugars is far more important in paleo terms than what species provides your protein. So don't be intimidated by the meat-meat-and-more-meat crowd--figure out what will work for you.

Paleo is not necessarily high meat. Focus on eating whole foods and get all the micro/macronutrients. If you are eating fish and eggs, I think you should be fine.

Short response if none of the above works or you're flat out uninterested in consuming meat products: Eat as much seafood and eggs as you like, eat a fair amount of coconut products, and potatoes (plus other roots & tubers). I think you'll get by with that pretty darn well.

side note The smell of bacon makes you nauseous . . . sad face.

Contrary to what you often see on PH, gorging on piles of animal flesh is not necessary. Fish, eggs, and dairy should work just fine, even without the holy grail of paleo: the bun-less bacon burger.

Go to a very very good Lebanese restaurant and asked them for lamb shish kebab (on skewers) and also stuffed grape leaves. You will love the way they make meat!

While there, also ask for baba ganoosh. Yum, yum!!!

I'm so glad you posted this! I just joined the site 2 days ago and was going to post a similar question. I'm like you in that I 100% am on board with the concept of the Paleo diet, but for me, I absolutely HATE the taste of meat. From the animal kingdom I eat chickens and pigs; that's it. No other birds, no red meat, nothing from the sea. (Or dairy, mushrooms, and eggplant.) It's hard to be paleo when your protein options are so limited -- you get really sick of chicken breasts and pork chops and eggs really quick.

So I totally hear you.

You're lucky in that you eat fish. There's much to be enjoyed from the sea, so go to town. I would kill to like fish. (I can't stand the smell, I can't even be around someone eating fish or red meat.)

It depends how strong your palette is. I'm a super taster, so flavors are hyper intense for me. A 1/4" piece of lamb that my husband says is very mild and delicate fills my mouth and sinus cavity with vomit-inducing flavors. If you're not quite as sensitive, the suggestions from others for highly spiced/seasoned is a great place to start.

Ethics are very important to me. The way animals are treated in our (CAFO) food system is truly deplorable. With that said, I am not upset by the fact the animal has to die -- we ALL die eventually, and a prey animal is most likely to die a stressful, painful death from a predator than of natural causes. So, slaughter is just a few hours out of an animals life. What troubles me is how they are raised -- filthy, stressful, confined conditions full of disease and misery. No thank you. It's very possible to buy humanely raised animal products -- local farms and farmers markets are great places to start, and there are certified humane programs out there that at least define some basic humane standards.

Further more, with a meat animal they only live long enough to reach their desired slaughter size and that's that. Cows and chickens continually produce milk and eggs, and as such, live in these miserable conditions for YEARS. Consequently, I personally believe it's more humane to eat meat than dairy or eggs because at least the animal is put out of their misery sooner. But that's just MHO...

Finally, you could not go paleo all the time -- have some specified cheat days, like paleo M-F, and cheats on the weekend. This is the only way I'm able to make it work. Again, chicken, pork chops and eggs get really boring really fast; but I can make it work for 5 days and then be "rewarded" for 2 where I can eat beans, tofu, rice, etc. This doesn't work for everyone, esp those with health or GI problems, but it might work for you.

Good luck!

Also -- I echo the sad face at not liking bacon. :( – Rogue Dietitan May 26 2012 at 5:05

If you say you'd like to be Paleo you need to work on the meat thing. High protein is the core of the diet. It's what separates Paleo from vegan/fruitarian/whole food diets.

There are no vegetable paintings at Lascaux. No eggs, no cheese. 100% animals.
