There are already some posts about sugar cravings but I haven't found an answer, which worked for me. So I'll try it again...
I have a massive sugar craving. Living without bread, pasta, milk... is no problem for me, but unfortunately I can't be without chocolate. I try to eat dark chocolate, but at the end of the day it contains milk and sugar, too. I use Stevia to sweeten my meals if necessary or my tea, as well as honey. And it has nothing to do with my monthly cycle, because I need it all the time.
So what to do?
A bit of L-Glutamine in capsule form (or put underneath the tongue in powder form) will take away sugar cravings anywhere from near immediately to 20 min.
I personally associate a chocolate/dirt/earth-like craving with low magnesium. Your levels okay? Cocoa, seeds, and nuts are good for this.
How to curb sugar cravings: What worked for me is to give up ALL FRUIT. I have blueberries maybe once a week, but that's about it. If you keep eating fruit, the cycle will perpetuate itself. So for me that was the answer. No sweeteners at all - no stevia, no honey. Also, go on Terry Wahls diet - you won't crave sugar at all.
How to curb chocolate cravings. First, I went on Terry Wahls diet and it helped me to curb all other cravings. I agree with her now - you get cravings because your brain fells your body that it is missing the essential nutrients. If you get your essential nutrients (9 cups of Terry Wahls per day), you will have no cravings.
I got raw cacao beans. Many people on Paleohacks told me they taste horrible. NOT TRUE!!! I totally love them. I eat them almost every day. I have to peel them so I know for sure - there is nothing else but cacao is in them.
Good luck and I hope you find what works for you.
It's tough! bump up the fat at dinner. This seems to help me. Also, there's NOTHING wrong with a late night cup of your home made BONE BROTH! dress it up with sea salt to taste and maybe add some olive oil or coconut oil. I've been experimenting lately and it's working really well for me.
I agree with a lot of the aforementioned responses, they could all help, but have you considered that within your gut you may have a yeast(candida) imbalance? Yeast feeds on sugar. If you have an overabundance, it can cause the cravings. There are specific foods that may be triggering the candida that you may not be aware of, google it and educate yourself. I would start with getting that in check first, then following the supplementation as needed if you find you're still having cravings. I know it's worked for me.
When I'm craving something sweet, I'll often have a couple of strips of bacon or slices of avocado or something else fatty. That usually helps a lot.
I also recommend Diane Sanfilippo's 21-Day Sugar Detox.
Sugar/carb cravings are a direct result of not having enough fat in your diet. Many people confuse this, however they fill themselves up with junk and wonder why that craving is never fulfilled.
I am having the same issue. As soon as I'm done with work or after I put the kids to bed- all I can think about is chocolate or ice cream. I already cut out fruit and alcohol. I guess I'll up the magnesium, try L-glutamine again, and work on will-power.
