As my first year of university winds to a close it's gotten me to thinking about my future career. It's also gotten me to wondering what everyone on paleo hacks does

It would be great to hear that everyone works outside or lives self-sustained lives on some idyllic farmhouse in the country but I imagine many of you have office jobs? Has paleo inspired you to change careers in any way? Or do you love your job?

I'm an English Literature student but before returning to university I worked as a junior web developer and then for a building society called Nationwide

Even at the age of 26 I still have no idea what I want to be when I grow up!

I'm 48 and I have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. I'm in the tech industry. – Sol May 27 at 23:51

Quite a few of us are in the tech industry it seems; that may be just a reflection of the types of folks that hang out on forums. See here: paleohacks.com/questions/89345/… – raney May 28 at 0:02

HuntingBears, if we all "works outside or lives self-sustained lives on some idyllic farmhouse in the country" we probably won't desperately need to do and learn and promote paleo. – bachcole May 28 at 7:36

yes! and I will tell people who ask, that the reason I look good (from weight loss!) is because I don't eat "this shit" and I point to the bread. – Dixie May 30 at 17:30

I work at Target with very little ambitions in life. Thanks to my diet, exercise, mental training and meditation, I am one of the top team members at my target. (4 out of a 100+ workers got the max pay raise) However, for years I've been learning to trade forex, and futures. It's a brutally challenging job with a huge pay off. I want trading for pure freedom and not excess wealth.

How do you reconcile the Bible with your beliefs about evolution? Assuming you believe in evolution. Most Christians I know find it easy to dismiss Paleo because it is based on evolution. Not to mention bread and grain play such a big role in many stories and metaphors in the Bible. Love to hear your thoughts on this. – Matthew Caton May 28 at 20:07

Are you in the US Matthew? That's interesting - I'm in the UK and most Christians I would say seem to happily accept evolution. Regarding bread/grain, the various ways this is used symbolically are entirely understandable in the context of a bread-based diet eaten by that civilisation - another reason context is so important when reading the Bible. Regarding actual paleo nutrition, perhaps you could make arguments that in the "Garden of Eden", man was a forager, and agriculture was part of the curse...? Not something I have strong beliefs in but an amusing thought perhaps. – Tom May 29 at 7:48

I think paleo is based in observable fact. I don't believe that any particular view of origin is necessary to practice good health. As far as bread eating, there is no command that bread be my primary nutrition. At communion we even serve gluten free options. As for origin I am a young earth creationist - please don'flame me too much fellow PHers. The timeframe of paleo going back 10k years still fits a young earth view. Note:I am not wanting to argue origins here nor do I want to engage in proselytizing anyone. I'm here to learn. – westroxel May 29 at 19:50

I'm a (female) firefighter. 21 yrs next month. I work 24 hours shifts and right now have a great bunch of guys that I work with. They are mostly young, and very health/exercise conscience. However, they eat a lot of sweets and that is hard for me to "live" with sometimes.

I am the head honcho for a very large medical practice. Its difficult everyday to see the lack of integration between nutrition (true nutrition, not the USDA pyramid) and medical problems. Also all of the problems that we, as patients, inflict on ourselves by not investing energy into improving our own health.

I'm a cook in a bar/restaurant that specializes in carbohydrates and huge portions haha. And yes, its really hard to stay paleo sometimes. None of the food on our menu is paleo, so I completely rely on food I bring and have to resist the urge to eat all the free food that I can. Even though the fries look SO GOOD

Wall Street law - it's wearing on me. 30, female, recently married, just wanting to go homestead somewhere, how I grew up. I wonder if I needed to prove something, to be able to get to the "top" coming from a very poor family in a rural area. To prove to myself that I could, but I yearn for a more natural life. 20 more years of this could put me in a great spot of power, but sometimes I feel like it is against what I want in my heart. The further I go into maintaining my current lifestyle, the more indebted to it I become. I don't really like that. But I don't know what to do. Well that felt nice to vent.

I got out of that gig and, of all things, went the military route. Best decision I've ever made. Great hours, lots of fit/health conscious individuals and no due diligence! – Captain Smoof Jun 21 at 19:32

M&A? Me too. (different field, though). Are you trying to escape? It's tough. As you said, it's tough to escape a certain lifestyle. It ends up owning you. – treeees Jul 26 at 12:48

I work at Whole Foods and teach yoga. Haha.

I had an office job when I first went paleo, never again. I'm not a career oriented person in general, but whatever I do for a living from now on, I am willing to trade higher income for being able to stand/walk/move at work - sitting at a computer makes me mega depressed.

I'm a licensed massage therapist who hasn't practiced in 5 years. I've also worked for a co-op for 10 years. I've done most things you can think of... Currently, I'm the beer and wine coordinator. I'm also one of the go to people for all things gluten free.

+1 because "beer and wine coordinator" sounds like a made up job. – Kasra May 28 at 2:46

Actually, it isn't. A co-op is like a grocery store, and different people are in charge of different things. I'm charge of that department. I do the ordering and I have knowledge about beer and wines. Not sure how it sounds made up. – Crabbycakes May 28 at 4:04
