I've been reading Robb Wolf, PaNu, Whole HEalth Source, Heart Scan Blog, etc. for a long time. They are great resources but VERY intimidating and complicated for a newbie. I've managed to absorb a lot over time but can't remember which articles said what and how to put a highlight reel together!

I want to share a handful of "best of" articles / blog posts from credible sources that accomplish the following:

  • Discredit the "low fat whole grain + statins" prevents heart disease groupthink.
  • Argue that "replacing wheat, sugar, vegetable oil with saturated fat" is heart healthy.
  • Show that high total cholesterol is not a predictor of cardiovascular disease and in fact low total cholesterol is more risky.
  • Small, dense LDL count (and other specific markers) are much more telling than TC.
  • Explain how decade-old nutrition/health policy was formed by flawed science and pushed through haphazardly; not to mention conflict of interest with big-agriculture and grain subsidies.

Does anyone have a list of a half-dozen blog posts or articles by various authors that can explain this case to an American Heart Association / Conventional Wisdom lay-thinker?

Thanks!

Here is a direct link to Dr. Cordain verbally explaining the entire paleo concept. I have sent this sole link to many people (seems to especially work with older people that perhaps dont wanna click around on blogs, yknow - hey mom hey dad): http://www.thepaleodiet.com/audio_video/Dr_Cordain_The_Paleo_Diet_and_multiple_sclerosis.mp3

And i think if you run into any China Study advocates you can rely on FreeTheAnimal's consolidation: http://freetheanimal.com/2010/07/the-china-study-smackdown-roundup.html

And finally here is Dr. Harris of PANU just giving the good basic layout: http://www.paleonu.com/panu-weblog/2009/11/27/health-and-evolutionary-reasoning-the-panu-method.html

I've fallen behind on updating it, but I have a 'Show Me The Science' page on my blog where I post links and explanations of the basic science behind paleo eating and a few of its forms.

I would also recommend you look up the movie Tom Naughton made recently - Fat Head - which deals with most of the points you're looking for in a very accessible and playful way. He links to his sources as well - try the Fat Head Movie blog for more info. Start with his No Bologna Facts page.

I ordered that movie a month ago from Amazon and they kept pushing back the shipping date. I gave up and asked for a refund. Also at Netflix they don't show when it will be available. There must be something going on with the movie. I want this movie badly! Way off topic I know but i needed to vent. – Aaron Curl Oct 16 2010 at 13:38
Sounds like there must be a reprint delay. I bought it via amazon not long after it was released. I know people who have watched it via Netflix too. It's been showing in various countries on local TV stations as well, so I wonder if it's available to 'acquire online' at this point... You can always buy it after you find it, anyway. Good luck! – Girl Gone Primal Oct 17 2010 at 2:55
Contact Tom Naughton. If nothing happens there, you can always go captain Jack Sparrow on it via torrents. – Ikco Oct 18 2010 at 5:34

You should definitely read Dr. Eades, though I don't have a list of the relevant posts.

This blog is pretty new, but has been collecting scientific articles on the healthiness of LC diets past and present.

The nutrition and metabolism society also posts about such things.

Thanks! were there any specific posts from those blogs that stood out? – Scott Shapiro Oct 15 2010 at 17:45
