I typically avoid dairy at all costs because it flares up my cystic acne, but I was wondering if there are certain cheeses that might be the least likely to trigger acne.

I've seen people who avoid milk because it causes acne for them, with the exception being raw milk, which for some reason they are able to handle without it resulting in acne.

I have food-triggered acne, but I've found it to be triggered by grains, nuts, and fruits in my own case. However, if I were you I'd try SCD-legal raw cheeses. My guess is that you'll find that the harder and longer aged the better.

My acne is food triggered and I'm pretty sure it's grains (I'm a Celiac, so makes sense), dairy (although only been 100% grain free for 6 weeks, so maybe over time dairy will be ok), and nuts. I thought for years it was red meat as well, but since going Paleo grass fed beef hasn't caused me any skin issues. I thought sugar for years as well, but since going Paleo I've been eating 4 bananas, 3 apples, and a pear every day for weeks with no new cystic acne. Any suggestions on where to find cheeses like you describe? Would Whole Foods have cheeses that fit that category? – Shawn May 28 2012 at 21:11

I should note that, while I say I tolerate dairy, I don't push it! I only eat dairy that's been cultured or fermented - kefir, yogurt, cheese. I suppose the butter I eat isn't always cultured, but that has very, very little lactose. – Arrowsican May 29 2012 at 3:47

Sucks, doesn't it? I can't eat cow's dairy, either, or I break out in huge cysts all over my face. I find that all forms of goat dairy are easy on my skin and have been eating it consistently for over a year now without an acne flare-up. (I noted the duration because it usually takes up to two weeks for the cysts to develop after I consume cow's dairy products, but I realize everyone is different.) Goat yoghurt and goat cheese are also safe for my sensitive tummy, too. :)

It DOES suck. When I was a teenager I probably drank around a gallon of whole milk per week. At that point I just assumed acne was part of being a teenager and didn't read into it, but LOVED milk. I'll have to try goat and see how it works for me. – Shawn May 29 2012 at 1:55

While cow cheese doesn't give me a problem, I have also heard from a number of people that goat and sheep cheese are easier for them to digest. Don't know if that's a nature of the animals, or the fact that it's more likely to be local, real, and unpasturized... – Arrowsican May 29 2012 at 3:49
I know, right, Shawn? It wasn't until I ran out of milk and didn't have the money to buy more/kept forgetting to buy more did my skin clear up. Was your cystic acne more adult/teen onset, as well? I recall drinking milk as a kid (but switched to skim as a teen because it was "healthier") and had pretty good skin as a child. I wonder what triggered it? (Also, I find that the lower the fat content in the milk, the quicker and worse the damage to my face. What's up with that? o.O) – Kaz May 29 2012 at 11:16
