Hi, i am interested in trying Paleo to help my mild/moderate acne. i am also prediabetic so i know cutting down on carbs will be good from a health pov.

Problem is i am trying to gain weight. I WT twice a week and cardio 3 times a week. Can anyone offer advice of what i can eat to hit my target of 2000-2500 calories per day. Nuts are out for me, except almond butter and so is dairy (though i hear this is not allowed on Paleo).

Any help would be appreciated.

This is as far as i got with a meal plan

Breakfast

green smoothie w coconut oil 120c protein 120-240

Lunch

"pea protein" Oh dear. Surely you could find something better to eat? – Warren D May 29 at 18:22
What are the "proteins" that you tend to eat? – Warren D May 29 at 18:24

Stop doing cardio and weight train only. Eat a lot more. What's your source of protein? Can you do eggs? Eggs are very easy to eat throughout the day, and if you can tolerate them you can eat quite a few daily.

I have food triggered acne, (grains, fruits and nuts (and probably lactose) for me). I have found I can eat moderate amounts of safe starches without digestive or acne issues. I've had problems with too much protein and too few carbs (hypothyroid type issues). If you can too I'd recommend eating a moderate amount. Beyond that, in my view the best way to get extra calories is through saturated or monounsaturated fats.

You might also give digestive bitters a try. My weight NEVER went up, no matter how hard I tried, but I gained 5 pounds when I started taking digestive bitters after meals.

The cardio is probably not helping you either. Less running and a lot more walking would probably serve you well.

All I can do is feel your pain.
Strict paleo = clearer skin, no sick feeling after eating, just no sick feeling ever, but can't gain size for a skinny person.

carbs = able to put on some size, but feel sick all the time.

I suppose I should add, if you DO want to feel sick on strict paleo, you can gain weight, you just have to overeat at every meal, which is a slow and painful process. – smackles May 29 at 2:33
And a big budget helps too. If you want to gain weight on paleo, you better be spending at least $10 a day on food. I can manage normal days with some eggs, bacon, chicken, ground beef, and a veggie for around $6 a day, maybe a tad more, but...no weight gain will be achieved. – smackles May 29 at 2:37
Carbs = "feel sick all the time"... Really? – Korion May 29 at 7:06
@smackles I overate at every meal for years in my teens, determined to put on a few pounds. It never worked, but probably did contribute to my acne and digestive issues... – Arrowsican May 29 at 14:26
^To the above post, same with me, and it's obvious skinny people have a serious problem, fat people have no problem, but are healthy and vibrant and are alive enough to complain about their minor problems like it's the worst thing in the world. – Henry S May 30 at 22:12

Don't even bother counting calories Lee. Just eat as much as you can! If you're weight training and doing cardio 2 and 3 times a week, you're not going to generate much body fat eating huge meals. 2500 calories? No wonder you're not gaining weight.

I eat double that on my workout days after fasting for 16+ hours.. LOL Seriously, I eat non-stop for some 3-4 hours straight. Usually my entire kitchen goes empty all at once.

Also, I don't know if this is allowed on PH but i'm going to suggest it anyway. Cannabis, for when you absolutely need to eat a lot of food. Strangely i have been able to not cheat whatsoever for months now whether I smoked an ounce or a gram each week. Without a doubt, I am able to eat a LOT more food when I do eat. And i'm currently doing intermittent fasting 16+ and have no problems not eating during the day either. Cannabis helps me consume excess food though. If this breaks rules feel free to delete it, mods.. – Zach May 29 at 2:31
