I went no 'poo several months ago. Previously I had tried pretty much every hair product in existence to try and help my dry hair, unfortunately none of them worked. I was hoping that being no poo would improve my hair, but thus far it's been about the same. I have long wavy hair a little bit past my sternum. The ends are horrendously dry and are all split (in fact it seems that the entire length of the hair is "split"). The roots, however, are always stringy-looking, they're probably oily. The general texture of my hair is very coarse and rough. I also have a lot of problems with tangles - even if I completely brush out my hair (which takes a very long time), 5 minutes later when I try to run my fingers through it the hair is all tangled again. Are there any no poo solutions for these issues?

well, when was the last time you got a trim? A haircut takes the rough ends off, which usually helps. Try that, first. |

You're not going to like hearing this, but it sounds like chopping several inches off is going to help the most. Having dead ends can make the rest of your hair look terrible. I know people rave about no poo, but I have never met a single person who does no poo that has hair that looks good. That's my opinion anyway. |

What are you using to wash your hair? I've been no poo for a couple of years but when I say 'no poo' I mean home-made shampoo (I use baking soda and water to wash and Apple Cider Vinegar and water as a conditioner) There's a good basic recipe here: http://www.diynatural.com/homemade-shampoo/ I've found they do as good a job as shampoo ever did and I think my hair looks better than it did before. There is a transition period though where hair will be a bit oilier and maybe itch a bit which for me lasted a couple of weeks. The key is experimenting with what works best for you but I genuinely believe that no-poo offers a good solution if you're willing to work with it! I hope this helps. Thanks! Rob |

I have the exact same problem. Went to the no-poo treatment three weeks ago and the only thing that looks good so far is the root, the rest of the hair is absolutely dry, with not only split ends but even broken in some parts. I'm not sure if this treatment is right for me, I'm very worried I'm just ruin my hair... |

I stopped using shampoo (conditioner only) a couple of weeks ago, and even though my area has hard water, my hair looks healthier, shinier, and I have NO split ends. I have short, thick hair that I'm trying to grow out, and I want my hair to look its best! You might try just using -cone free conditioner (the cheap stuff--you'll have to use a lot of it to work through your hair). And I would NOT recommend brushing your hair while it's wet. Use a wide-toothed comb and, before you go to bed and your hair is dry (I assume you shower in the morning?), brush from roots to ends with a boar bristle brush so you can evenly distribute the oils. The important thing is not to force your way through any tangles. Since your hair is so long and dry, you might also try skipping a day of hair washing once a week. And the only thing that will get rid of split ends is a trim :( |

I had long curly hair that was soooo dry at the ends and super oily at the scalp. I don't use shampoo anymore but it took me 8 months to get to where I am now. I had to cut my hair off to where the damage started. You can't undo damage. To me that was devastating but now my hair growing beautifully! Use a condiment bottle for the baking soda wash so you only get your scalp to control the oiliness and not dry out the rest of your hair. For the rest of your hair, use Dr. Bronner's hair conditioner. It is completely natural and it has done wonders for my hair. It takes a long time to undo damage to your scalp and hair but it is SO WORTH IT!!!! My hair never ever gets tangled and it's the first time I've ever had compliments! You can also do other washes for dry hair like egg yolks with apple cider vinegar and lemon juice (rinse with cold water). That helps with replenishing the oils of your hair. I don't even use hair conditioner anymore. Just apple cider vinegar and water occasionally. |

I agree with the folks above--go to a stylist you trust (ask your friends if you don't have one) and tell her to cut off all the damage! Don't look, don't tell her "2 inches" or whatever, just let her do it. Then get a trim every 8 weeks. It seems counter productive but if you have crazy wavy/curly hair like me it really looks longer if its trimmed. I've been a version of no shampoo for about 10 years and my 7 year old daughter is too. Sunday night is hair wash night and we just use a teeny bit of baby shampoo to scrub on our scalps and let the bubbles run down to the ends with COOL water. We condition almost every day. If we are really dirty we might do a full shampoo--like if we just got home from camping and are smokey. |

I used to have dry hair from shampooing too much and not getting adequate nutrients. Now I have normal hair, neither dry nor oily. I rinse it every time I have a shower (every 2 days) and wash it with shampoo and conditioner about once a week, sometimes twice. I have found that you can get away with using any old cheap shampoos as long as you use a really good conditioner. After shampooing, leave your conditioner in for at least five minutes before rinsing. I have heard that coconut oil is a good treatment for dry hair. I've never tried it, though. Excessive sun exposure can damage your hair. I went to Italy in summer once and when I came back my hair was BRITTLE. It goes without saying that you should eat foods which promote healthy cell growth in all areas of the body and accordingly the hair. Here are some nutrients you should be focusing on:
Eat a balanced diet which includes sources of these nutrients. Some good ones are: spinach, fish & shellfish, almonds, walnuts, flax and avocados. Also, hormonal imbalances can cause unhealthy hair. Try to get enough sleep and avoid stress. It will take time for your hair to grow so be patient. |
